It¡¯s ironic: plus-sized women greatly need well-fitting foundation garments, but they are most abundant for average-sized women. It can be difficult for a plus-sized woman to find comfortable, well-fitted foundation garments. Foundation garments, incidentally, include bras, briefers, girdles, shapers, cinchers and the like.
Most women wear bras, so these are the most common foundation garment, and their sizing varies. Some plus-sized women can buy bras in department stores. It all depends on what size she wears. Some women wear fairly average sized bras, but plus-sizes in other fashions. In general, if a woman wears a 44D size bra or under, she will be able to find her size in a department store. Anything larger will probably need to come from a specialty store.
A rule for sizing most foundation garments is to have the sales associate measure. She doesn¡¯t have to read the measurements out loud, but to get a correct fit, she¡¯s got to know what a customer¡¯s measurements are. There are various formulas for determining band and cup size, usually, if a woman is measured at the point of the bustline, her cup size is determined by the number of inches she is over her chest measurement. Sometimes this is accurate, sometimes it isn¡¯t. It may be a good starting point, but cup size can only be determined with certainty by fit. Bra manufacturers also vary, and a ¡°C¡± cup from one maker may be a completely different shape and size than that of another. So, go prepared to try on several bras to find the best one.
Another choice for plus-sized women buying bras is one that every woman faces: soft cup or underwire? This question is usually decided by personal preference. Underwires have a habit of poking in uncomfortable places, or being visible through clothing. It depends on the style. Large-busted women may not feel a soft cup offers enough support, however. This is another of those times when a woman will just need to try on bras until she finds one that fits comfortably and looks good under her clothing. A plus-sized woman should, however, check the sides of the bra that go underneath the arms. These should be high enough so her skin doesn¡¯t roll over the top of the bra. This is more attractive and much more comfortable.
She should also try to strike a happy medium between comfort and looks when adjusting the straps. They should be short enough to pull the breasts up, but not uncomfortably so. Women who have larger busts may also want to consider extra wide, cushioned or gel-filled straps, to help relieve strap marks and stress on the shoulders from the weight of the breasts.
Panty briefers are not difficult to fit. These are girdle-like briefs fashioned like a panty. They are usually sized as women¡¯s clothing, and fit like a panty, as well. A woman will usually just need to choose the level of support she is looking for.
Girdles are a different story. Since they come down lower on the leg, and since many plus-sized women have large thighs, girdles can be torturous. A woman will need to be careful to choose a girdle that will not constrict her thighs. However, a sales associate may need to measure around the waist and hips to help determine the appropriate size, as well.
Other foundation garments, such as all-in-one body briefers and waist cinchers will need to be measured for, as well. These garments can help a plus-sized woman look better in her clothes, but she will need to find ones that are comfortable, so she won¡¯t mind wearing them so much.
A plus-sized woman should also think about fabrics in foundation garments. There are many new materials on the market, so a woman isn¡¯t constrained to wear a girdle made mostly of rubber, any longer. She should look for material that ¡°breathes¡± as much as possible, so she won¡¯t be swimming in sweat by the end of the day, particularly in warm weather.
It all comes down to comfort and fit when a plus-sized woman is looking for foundation garments. The fit should be good, and the garment should be comfortable enough to wear whenever she needs it. |
