If you regularly attend church, picking the place to have your wedding is pretty easy. You¡¯ll choose your church, or your fiancee¡¯s church, or maybe even the church your parents attend. 

But if you don¡¯t go to church, or have a diverse group of friends that you don¡¯t want to make uncomfortable by having a big church wedding, you may be stumped for options that will allow you to have a beautiful, classy ceremony. Following are some ideas for alternative places to have your ceremony, at least some of which should be available no matter where you live. 

Parks: From lovely city parks within the city limits to state or county parks farther away, a park can be a wonderful place to have a wedding. They¡¯re usually free or cheap to rent for a few hours, the beautiful backdrop of mother nature gives you free decorations and the whimsical location will put your guests in the mood for fun. Of course it might not be quiet in the rest of the park, you¡¯ll need microphones and probably won¡¯t be able to have dancing or a big meal (unless you bring in tents, tables, chairs, etc., which can be very pricey) but if you want a small, informal wedding this is a great option. Remember to get a tent from a rental supply company just in case the weather doesn¡¯t cooperate with your plans. 

City buildings: By this I don¡¯t mean city hall, unless your city has a beautiful city hall. Think about historic buildings or civic centers owned by the city. These venues, when they allow weddings, will often be cheaper than a venue that¡¯s set up just to do weddings (which we¡¯ll get to in a minute). I got married on the steps of my local ¡°town center,¡± a small convention center on the downtown square surrounded by gardens. The reception was inside in one of their plain Jane office space rooms (but because the room is so plain it can be jazzed up any way you want). Call your local chamber of commerce for more information on public buildings that might be available for a small wedding. 

Historic homes and buildings: Every city has history, and the vast majority of cities have some kind of historic homes or other buildings that are open as museums for the school kids to tour every year and for other interested people to visit. Often these homes will also allow weddings, either on their grounds or inside the building. Drive through your city¡¯s historic district and see if there are any such homes, then call or drop by to see if they do weddings. Or call your local historical society for more information on historic buildings that might be opened for private functions. 

Museums: Along the same lines, you can often find museums that are willing to allow weddings in their restaurants or on their grounds, particularly if you don¡¯t mind getting married at odd hours (when the museum is not open). This option again gives you a beautiful backdrop for your ceremony (whether it¡¯s the building or the art) so your decoration costs will be minimal. You might not be able to have food, or you may be restricted to a certain area of the museum if you have food, but all that will be spelled out in your contract when you rent the space. This is a pricey option but can give you an unforgettable experience. 

Restaurants: Speaking of restaurants, if you¡¯re having a small wedding it might be possible to rent out your favorite restaurant. If you don¡¯t want to have the ceremony there, at least you could have the reception there and have the whole restaurant to yourself. Some restaurants have banquet rooms that can be decorated however you like, with the ceremony space at one end and the reception space at the other, for instance. This is a particularly good idea if the restaurant has some special significance for the couple, such as the place where they had their first date or where they got engaged.

Wedding-targeted venues: In larger cities you will find sites that are in the business of staging weddings. They may be chapels or buildings that look more like homes. Some may insist on religious ceremonies, while others are more flexible. These venues often are one-stop shops; you can have the ceremony and reception there and they will rent you everything from the chairs to the linens to the knife to cut the cake. Some will even cater for you. As you can imagine, these venues can get pretty expensive but if you consider that the services they provide are all things you would need anyway, it¡¯s not that outrageous. A plus to these places is that the people who work there are very professional, they¡¯ve put on a lot of weddings and will be able to help you with all aspects of planning. 

Private residences: Getting married in someone¡¯s backyard doesn¡¯t have to be tacky. If you have, or know someone who has, a lovely home and a big backyard, this can be a good, free option. Again you have the threat of bad weather, but you have the added intimacy of inviting good friends over to witness something really private and special. Of course you¡¯ll have to clean the house before the wedding, because people will need bathrooms even if you¡¯re planning to have the ceremony outside. 

Other ideas: Check out a local university to see if they have beautiful buildings that they allow weddings in. If you¡¯re a member, consider your country club (or any other club you might belong to that has a building). For nontraditional ceremonies, consider places that are special to you (from the school cafeteria where you met to the mini-golf course where you went on your first date). You might get a little extra attention if you have your wedding in a ¡°crazy¡± place, but that will just make it all the more memorable.
