Spilling wax on your carpet may seem like a hopeless situation. It is especially discouraging if your carpet is a light shade or new. Cheer up! By using a few products that you all ready have around the house and a little patience, you can successfully remove spilled wax from your carpet.

Spilling wax on your carpet may seem like a hopeless situation. It is especially discouraging if your carpet is a light shade or new. Do not despair!! By using a few items that you all ready have around the house and a little patience, you can successfully remove spilled wax from your carpet.

First, gather your supplies. Here¡¯s what you'll need:

-Brown paper bags (Just a few for small spills, more if the spill is large)

-A regular household iron on a low to medium setting

-A butter or putty knife

-Denatured Alcohol

-Water

-Sponge

-Clean Rags

Next, make sure that the wax has cooled and is not still hot or warm. You can cool the wax faster by placing a bag of ice on the area. Use the knife to scrape any loose bits away from carpet. Be careful not to tear away the carpet fibers. Remove as much wax as you can in this manner.

Now take a piece of the brown paper bag and set it on top of the wax. Take the tip of the iron and slowly begin to rub it over the wax. The wax should start to melt and attach itself to the paper. Adjust the iron¡¯s heat setting if it seems to hot or is not hot enough. Be careful not to let the iron touch any part of the carpet or else you may scorch your carpet. Remove the paper once all the wax has been absorbed. 

For a truly stubborn stain, it may be helpful to use the butter knife along with the iron. While you are applying heat to the wax, use the butter knife underneath the paper to gently coax the wax off of the carpet. Work from underneath the area to loosen the wax from the fibers.  If this is your first time attempting to remove wax in this manner you may find it easier to have another person assist you. While you are applying heat to the stain, he or she can use the knife.

If dyes from the candle are left on your carpet, apply a small amount of denatured alcohol to the stain. Then simply sponge the area with a little water and pat dry. To clean the iron if there is any waxy residue left, slide it over one of the rags. Once you master this technique you can use it to remove wax from clothing, rugs, and upholstered fabric as well. Just follow the same steps as outlined above.

 If you don¡¯t feel up to all the elbow grease and time that this method entails, there are a few products on the market that are specifically designed to do the task for you. Ask at your local craft, hardware, or super store.  Also strong, citrus-based cleansers (such as those containing orange oils) can be used to dissolve the wax. It is advisable to test a small portion of carpet that is not often seen (such as inside a closet) with such cures to make sure they won¡¯t dye your carpet.
