Over the years the most common cause of shouting, crying and cursing in the kitchen and or the bathroom is the loss of a ring, a wedding set, or earrings down the sink drain. In past it was a case of call the local plumber with hopes he will come out on an emergency and rescue the precious keepsakes from the depths of the drainpipes. With the labor prices the way they are today, a range from $35 to $45 dollars an hour and as much as double that in an emergency with a $100 to $150 dollar minimum charge it is time that you found out just how easy it of a job it is to do and learn to DIY (Do It Yourself).
The first thing to know, I know it is obvious but has to be said, if the object falls into the sink in the kitchen with the garbage disposal unit, DO NOT turn it on and DO NOT put your hand in it. Underneath the sink is an electrical power outlet where the disposal unit is plugged. Unplug it.
Now we are down under the sink, in that catch all cabinet full of cleaners, scrubbers, empty jars, boxes of curlers, and what have you. Empty it!
Good, got it empty? Now you will need a deep pan to catch some water that is always in the pipes, a blade type screwdriver, hammer and a pipe wrench. Place the pan under the trap (in layman’s terms that is the gooseneck under the sink) that is more than likely where your ring is now laying. Loosen the large nut-like connections at where the drainpipe comes down out of the sink to the trap and the one at the other end of the trap at the pipe that goes into the wall. You will need to loosen with a pipe wrench at first and then they will turn easily by hand.
Now remove the trap and turn it upside down and drain everything out into the pan, your ring should be there. If by chance it is in the garbage disposal, there is a quick lock flange ring right at the sink use the screwdriver and hammer and gently tap it until it turns releasing the disposal unit and then turn the unit upside down emptying everything into the catch pan.
Now re-assemble pipe in reverse of the order described above. The last thing to do is plug the disposal unit electrical into the outlet. Run water full from the tap and check for leaks, and turn on disposal unit to assure yourself it is working in good order. The whole operation should only take about fifteen minutes to complete.
Remember, next time you take off your rings to wash, put them in a safe, deep tray, just far enough away that they will not end up down the drain again.
Hey! Wouldn’t this be a good time to re-organize all that stuff in the cabinet under the sink?
