Landscaping is a relatively easy and inexpensive way to improve your home＊s appearance. However, water shortages in desert areas make maintenance of some traditional landscaping expensive and unfriendly to the environment. One solution is to create a landscape that is designed to use little water and to thrive in a desert. 

Many people assume desert landscapes must be bland and lifeless, but this is far from true. There are many beautiful low-water options that can be used to create an attractive backyard landscape.

Desert plants

A wide variety of plants have drought-resistant tendencies. Some of the most popular desert-friendly landscape plants fall into the following categories: 

Cacti: 

One of the most obvious and familiar of the drought-resistant plants is the cactus. 

Designed to hoard water, cacti are the camels of the plant world. Cacti can survive months 每 or even years 每 without water. 

Succulents: 

The plant family known as succulents is also known for water storage. Including plants such as Agave, Aloe, Astroloba, Yucca and Hoyas, succulents are attractive although they are often somewhat bulbous in shape. 

Deep-rooted plants:  

Some plants have long roots that allow them to access deep water sources, despite dry surface conditions. This category includes the leafy Acacia, the roots of which may reach as far as fifty feet below the ground＊s surface. Mesquite is a deciduous shrub that can keep most of its leaves even in dry environments. Mesquite can grow to a tree-like height and can be used as a yard border. Cottonwood trees also send their roots growing toward sub-surface water and early settlers used this tree as an indicator of deep springs. 

Native Grasses:

Unlike the grasses used for most lawns, there are some low water grasses appropriate for turf. The bluegrass and red fescue varieties of grass are appropriate for yards inn dry areas. 

Other options: 

Also known as the California Fan Palm, the Desert Palm tree is indigenous to the Western United States and Mexico; it requires very little water to survive, thrives on full sun and can tolerate salty soil. 

Native to the American southwest, the Desert Sand Verbena is a creeper with long flowering stalks. It has bright pink, fragrant flowers and blooms annually in late winter and early spring. 

Mojave Asters are a member of the sunflower family. They bloom with purple and yellow flowers in the spring. 

Hardscape, Rock and Sand

Hardscape 每 the patios, walkways and other structures of a backyard landscape 每 and landscaping rock, pebbles and sand are important parts of creating a water-friendly yard.  

Use of hardscape surfaces, such as paved or brick patios, to replace large expanses of lawn are a simple way to reduce water usage in yard maintenance. When large areas are paved, use brick, colored tile or textured concrete to create designs and patterns; this alleviates the visual boredom caused by uninterrupted pavement. 

Consider replacing a section of lawn with a field of tiny pebbles or sand, crossed by water-worn stepping stones. Such a landscape can be reminiscent of a peaceful Zen garden while removing the need to water large areas. Sand and pebbles are available in a variety of colors, sizes and textures, allowing a landscaper complete control over an easily maintainable environment. 

Landscape rock can be used in combination with pebbles or sand to add interest and texture, to create a border or to place alongside plants.
