Location: Home > house > Home moving guide: choosing a professional moving company for interstate moves
Psychologists say that moving is one of the top five most stressful experiences we might endure throughout our lives. Worrying about the safe transport of your treasured belongings should not add to your stress. Picking a trustworthy, reputable professional moving company is an important life decision.
When charging for an interstate move, companies base their prices on distance from one location to the other, final weight of shipment, and services rendered such as packing and disassembly. Estimates must be in writing and can be either binding or non-binding. A binding estimate is guaranteed regardless of your shipment¡¯s final weight. Non-binding is a risk because your final shipment weight and the cost of additional services could be more than the estimate, but sometimes it can be less. To be sure that you get the best value for your money evaluate at least three different on-site written estimates.
Using the yellow pages, name recognition, and personal references choose several companies to call. A professional moving company will not give an estimate over the phone and will come to your home to assess everything you want moved and discuss any services needed. Be thorough when showing the representative your belongings and don¡¯t forget about an attic, basement, or any special items.
First impressions really do matter and the way a company representative interacts with you may be indicative of how they will treat your belongings. If the person is courteous and professional this is a reflection of their level of customer service. It is important that they take the time to show they care about your individual household and explain their services and obligations completely.
Be assertive when obtaining your estimates. Remember that you are the one interviewing the moving company and deciding whom to hire and entrust with your goods. Below is a series of questions to ask each professional moving company you consider:
- Is your company licensed?
- How long has it been in business?
- Have any complaints been filed against the company?
- Are my items insured throughout the move?
- Can you provide a guaranteed pick-up and delivery date?
- How and when do you accept payment?
- How do you handle claims on damaged pieces?
- Do you charge extra for certain items or services?
That last question is critical and needs to be explored in depth. Hidden charges are common amongst even the most reputable moving companies. Storage fees are standard, but sometimes short-term storage can be negotiated. Ask if they charge for evenings or weekends or an extra flight of stairs. Many companies have additional fees for bulky items such as pianos, grandfather clocks, or large screen TV¡¯s. Extra costs are often incurred for preparing appliances and assembling and disassembling beds or other furniture. Packing fees and materials can almost double your costs and should be written out clearly in your estimate as well.
Relocating a house full of furniture and sometimes cars can be a costly endeavor. The old adage ¡®too good to be true¡¯ should be recalled if one company¡¯s estimate is glaringly less expensive than the others. Reputation is important and considerable weight should be put on any personal references.
Even with an interstate move there are places where you can cut costs. Packing materials purchased directly from professional moving companies tend to be highly overpriced and many other stores sell less expensive boxes, paper, and tape. Some homeowners and renters insurance policies cover your belongings during transport and not paying the moving company¡¯s insurance fee can save you money. If you are able to be flexible, try not to move in the summer, the height of the relocation season.
Professional moving is a competitive, but sometimes scam-ridden business. Be assertive, be wary, and remember that you have rights as a customer. Check with the Better Business Bureau if you have any concerns or just to verify the company¡¯s good standing. Take the time to read and understand everything that you sign. With this knowledge and some tenacity you can choose a trustworthy moving company to carefully and safely move your valuables from one home to your next. |
