Spring cleaning is something most people dread. It involves extensively cleaning areas of the home that aren¡¯t attended to on a regular basis. Although it isn¡¯t an easy task, spring cleaning doesn¡¯t have to be something formidable. There are simple methods of cleaning and sprucing up your home. These methods and techniques require minimal effort and provide outstanding results.
The ceilings in a home are often ignored for years. Ceilings wouldn¡¯t get dirty, would they? Nothing could be further from the truth. Although dirty hands never touch the ceilings, they too become quite dirty after a while. Smoke, cooking grease, and dust rise and adhere to the ceilings in a home. Washing walls is a difficult enough task, but the chore of washing ceilings is unimaginable. You can easily wash the ceilings in your home using a clean sponge mop, a bucket, a little oil soap, and warm water. Begin by putting about ? cup of oil soap and warm water in a 3-gallon bucket. Using a clean mop head, mop the ceilings in the same manner as you would mop the floor. The oil soap will gently remove dirt and grease, and it will give the room a fresh clean scent. When only a small amount of oil soap is used, rinsing is not required. You¡¯ll be surprised at how dirty the water becomes, and it will probably be necessary to change it a few times during the process. Your rooms will become noticeably brighter. You¡¯ll no doubt see the difference and wonder why you didn¡¯t wash the ceilings long ago.
Spring is a time to begin opening windows and welcoming the fresh air. During the winter when windows remain closed, carpets can become stale and sometimes take on common household odors. Scented carpet freshening powder is one solution, but the aroma doesn¡¯t last very long. After a few days the scent is gone. These carpet freshening products are nice, but they are also rather expensive. Try sprinkling plain baking soda on your carpets. Use a clean spice container that has a removable lid with holes, and cover all of the carpets with a light dusting of baking soda. Allow the baking soda to remain on the carpets overnight, and in the morning, vacuum away the odors. Your carpets will be revitalized, and your home will have a clean fresh scent. If you enjoy the many scented carpet powders that are available, try mixing a little with baking soda. The powder will last longer, and you¡¯ll still get to enjoy the scent of your choice. Lightly dust the carpets every time you vacuum, and the scent will linger. Accessorize your rooms with candles or air fresheners of the same scent to make it more pronounced. Doing so will keep your home smelling fresh all year long.
Cleaning window screens the old-fashioned way is a dreadful task. Dirty window screens can be easily cleaned using a steam cleaner. Steam cleaners can be rented for a reasonable price, and screens will look like new when the job is finished. You can also use a steam cleaner to easily clean the exhaust fan above your range. It will remove layers of cooking grease and dust. It can also be used to clean layers of grime from your stovetop. Consider sharing the expense of renting a steam cleaner with a friend. You¡¯ll both benefit greatly by getting an undesirable job completed with minimal effort and expense.
While doing your annual spring cleaning, consider getting rid of items you no longer have use for. Set them aside in the garage, basement, or a storage area. Get together with a friend or two, and have a sale. You¡¯ll make a little money, and you will gain more space in the process. Don¡¯t let unused items gather dust and dirt over the years. If you haven¡¯t used something in the past several months, chance are you never will. Get rid of the clutter and make this spring a time to start fresh.
A home can be ever so nice, but if it isn¡¯t clean and organized, it isn¡¯t comfortable or welcoming. When your spring cleaning is finished, you¡¯ll be able to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor. You¡¯ll be pleased that you followed these valuable tips and suggestions to make the chore of spring cleaning a little less daunting. |
