Drip irrigation takes water directly to the plants' roots.  Unlike sprinkler irrigation systems the drip irrigation system does not disperse the water over a large area. It takes the water, through small pipes or tubes, and drips it at the root base of a plant.  This method allows every drop of water to be used by the plant, therefore minimizing wasted water. 

Of course, this method of watering is not the best for all types of gardens.  There are some specific times and types of gardens that are best suited for drip irrigation. These include: drought stricken areas, desert climates, containers such as planters or hanging baskets, and anywhere you would like to eliminate water run-off and can feed plant roots directly. 

Drought Stricken Areas:  If you live in the West or Southwest United States, you probably already know that these areas are prone to droughts.  During droughts many states require watering restrictions that make it difficult to grow luscious gardens and many favorite plants and trees.  Using a drip line to water plants helps to make the best use of what little water is available.  It also helps eliminate run-off and waste that can happen when using other watering methods.

Desert Climate:  In states including but not limited to Nevada, Utah, Arizona, California, New Mexico and Colorado drip irrigation systems are an integral part of gardens.  When using xeriscape, or desert landscaping, a drip system is useful.  Since water is always scarce in these areas it is important to take those simple steps to not waste such a precious resource.  Consider using a drip irrigation system if you live in any of the states listed above or if you live in a desert climate.  

Containers:  Because it is so easy to forget to water your plants in containers, using a drip irrigation system can be a lifesaver for both you and your plants.  Some drip emitters come especially designed for containers.  Use them for planters, hanging baskets, and even plants in greenhouses.  TIP: When using drippers in hanging baskets, put a container of plants under the hanging basket to catch any water that soaks through.  You can water two containers with one drip line.      

Other: You can even use this method of watering if you just want to minimize wasted water and avoid water run-off.  Be creative and use it whenever you see that water may be wasted by using a typical spray watering system.  Also, if you want to take water directly to a plant or tree use the drip irrigation system.     

When to NOT Use Drip Irrigation: Some areas that DO NOT qualify as good places to use drip irrigation are the following: lawns, large and densely planted gardens such as vegetable gardens or some large flower gardens.  These areas would not work because they have too many roots that need water that using individual drip lines would not be cost-effective and would probably not save any water. Drip irrigation is a great way to save water in any climate and for almost any landscape.
