Because of its mainly warm, tropical environment, Florida is the perfect haven for those wanting to escape the chill of colder climates. The problem with that theory, however, is that insects feel the same way. Most areas of the country have to fight some type of bug at certain times of the year, but Floridians must deal with these pesky insects nearly all year long. If you are a Florida resident, there are steps you can take to stop, or at least lessen, your encounters with pests.
Cockroaches are ugly and disgusting; unfortunately, they are also found in abundance in Florida¡¯s warm and humid climate. Silverfish are another common pest found in Florida residences. One of the first things you need to do to rid your home of these insects is take your kitchen garbage out frequently and clean up any spilled food, especially food left in dark places, where roaches and silverfish usually hide. You need to look for areas of entry into your home and fix these areas such as torn screens and holes around vent work and pipes. You will also need to trim back hedges, shrubs and other vegetation that may be touching your house. You can easily use insect sprays and insect baits, but for hard to reach areas, such as under sinks, cabinets, and major appliances, boric acid is very effective. Just be sure that small children and pets can not get to the boric acid.
If you have pets and live in Florida, you will almost certainly have to deal with fleas. Many people believe that if they get rid of the animal or just put their pet outside, then they won¡¯t have a flea problem. Unfortunately, it takes more than removing the animal from your house to get rid of the fleas because fleas don¡¯t stay on the animal. Instead, they feed on the animal, then hop off to hide in warm, dark places such as couch cushions, carpets, rugs, cracks in floors, under the house, and many other places. Flea eggs are very hardy and resistant to insecticides, so it is very important to break the life cycle of a flea.
You will first need to vacuum any area of the house that might be a flea haven and wash your pet¡¯s bedding. Before you begin treatment, remove any children and pets, including birds and fish, from the house and keep them away after treatment for at least a couple of hours. You will need to plan on treating your house and surrounding yard every two weeks for at least three, and maybe even four, treatments.
You can treat your home using several different methods. You might want to buy a commercial spray. Be sure to cover as much area as possible, both inside an out. Foggers are another option. They do not have great coverage range, however, so you will probably need to buy several to really be effective. Sevin dust is effective in small areas outside. Concentrate heavily on areas that are occupied by your pet.
Ants, though one of the smaller insects, can still become very annoying. Over the counter insecticides specifically designed for ants can be effective, but you probably have a perfectly good alternative in your pantry. If you see a line of ants, promptly wipe them and the area around them with a wet sponge. After you have determined their entryway into the house, you can sprinkle it with paprika, dried chili powder, lemon juice, or dried peppermint.
Termites are another type of insect that can create huge problems for Florida homeowners. Because termites can cause such extensive damage to the structure of your home, you really need to call in a pest control company. You can take action to deter termites from invading your home, however, by keeping making sure you don¡¯t leave piles of wood and branches stacked close to or under your house. Make sure you check for leaks under the house and remove any old and rotting wood that might be in your sub-flooring or along porches and steps.
With a little vigilance and a lot of determination, you can win the battle against the many types of pest that live in Florida. |
