Got a squeaky door that is annoying you to no end? Don't let it drive you crazy, oil and repair that door yourself. This article will help you.

Most squeaks come from hinges. Simply oiling the hinges can stop most squeaks. Why? Hinges can rust over time and even a little rust can cause an awful noise. Since rust is dry, lubricating the hinge with oil helps the hinge to move more smoothly. Rust is easily caused by moisture, such as humidity and rain. To oil hinges you first need oil. You can use silicone, graphite, or even motor oil spray. Cooking oil will work too (such as olive oil). If you're not sure what to use, go to a hardware or home improvement store and ask a sales clerk for their advice. They will probably recommend a certain product that comes in a can with a red straw like tube. Ultimately you just need some kind of lubricating oil to get the job done.

Start off one hinge at a time. While applying the oil be sure to move the door back and forth to get a good coating of oil on every angle of the hinge. Start off with a little oil and add as needed. Too much oil just makes a mess. After oiling one hinge, check to hear if the door still squeaks. If it does, continue to oil each hinge until the door stops squeaking.

Door still squeaking? You may need to take apart the hinges and clean them thoroughly. Be sure to take the pin out and clean inside the hole. Rust can hide in there without you even seeing it. Use steel wool or a metal brush for best rust removal. Then re-attach the hinges. They may still need a little oil after being re-attached. This will not only help them move smoother but a little oil applied regularly may help prevent future rusting.

 If you have done everything you can to the hinges and your door still squeaks it may be the door handle. Sometimes a handle rusts as well. First try oiling the part of the handle that actually latches into the door frame. If that doesn't stop the squeak, take the door handle off, lightly oil all moving parts, and re-attach. Now it should be better. And remember, when it comes to hinges and door handles if they cannot be fixed with oil they can always be replaced.

Sometimes a door squeaks because it is rubbing against something. This happens because it was either installed wrong or the weather caused it to settle off kilter. The problem can be a sagging hinge, the door handle not meeting up into the plate right, or even the door rubbing against the door frame. You may have to really investigate how your door is opening and closing to pin point the problem. Some easy solutions include tightening the screws that are holding the hinge. Sometimes you need to take the hinge off and reposition it slightly (say an eighth of an inch or so). If the door handle is not meeting up into the plate in the door frame, just unscrew the plate, move it a little, and re-attach. When the door is rubbing against it's frame the solution can be a simple as sanding the area. You can sand either the door frame or the door itself it is made of wood. Just remember always start with the simple fixes first. Most likely they will either solve the problem or at least make it better. Hopefully now you will be able to stop that annoying squeaking and keep your door opening and closing smooth.
