Cost is a definite factor when purchasing trees and shrubs for a landscaping project, and it's easily possible to run up a tab of hundreds of dollars before you complete the task. To save a little money, hunt for end-of-season specials, shop in remote areas and search for online sales.

You don't have to be an artist to begin this undertaking, just make a crude drawing of the spots where you'll be planting and then make a rough assessment of how many individual bushes and trees you will need. The trees are easy to estimate since they are not normally planted in clusters, but the bushes and flowers will take a little more thought. To estimate how many trees you will need, mark each spot where you would like to plant a tree. A close estimate for a sapling of a common tree found in your area is $15, but for a fruit tree, expect to pay upwards of $25. And, you'll likely pay at least $50 or more for trees that are rare to your area, over $100 for exotic selections.

To guess the cost of shrubs, first select a design. Will you be clumping them? Using them for hedges? If you want them to grow tightly together, count on planting one bush for every linear foot. This is adjustable depending upon how closely you want the bushes. Allow approximately $15 per bush for some varieties, but as little as $5 on others. There is usually a picture attached to each bush so you can tell what it will look like at maturity. This might help you decide how many to purchase.

Flowers are somewhat less expensive than shrubs or trees and can be spread out over large areas, or be huddled together. Some common yard flowers can be purchased for as little as $1 per plant, and even less if you buy them by the "flat", a tray of flower starters that are usually discounted if purchased in quantity. If you'll be planting bulb-type flowers, expect to pay $3-$5 for a small packet of the bulbs. Of course, you'll probably want to select flowers which will return year after year to avoid the expense of replacing them annually. 

Some plants are purchased just for their ground-covering effect. Normally this kind of plant grows rapidly, so allow for 1 plant every 10', at about $12-$15 each. Some of these "creepers" can even cover up to 50', so check with the particulars before deciding how many you will need.

If you already know exactly what you want, shop around locally or even online, but keep in mind the shipping costs associated with online purchases. Look for sites that offer free shipping but also have reasonable prices. Locally, your neighborhood nursery likely carries a decent assortment of commonplace shrubs and small trees, but watch those prices and wait for sales. After looking around, ask when or if any of the bushes or flowers that you're interested in will be reduced soon.

Discount department stores now carry a variety of fruit trees, shrubs and bulbs, but the quality might not be as high as you would find at a nursery. Again, ask the department manager if they know when the foliage might be on sale. Towards the end of planting season, it's possible to find even better prices, but make sure you understand the time limits of how soon the plants need to be in the ground and how long they need to root before first frost. 

And, don't forget to allow for necessary materials which accompany many foliage purchases, such as mulch, lime, fertilizer, root-starting powder, landscaping timbers and bordering rocks. If you see that you're going over budget, you can substitute less expensive choices or even add more to your landscaping design at a future date.
