If you have an asphalt drive or porch that needs repair, chances are you think you need a professional to come in and fix it.  Professionals use a heating method that most consumers don¡¯t have the resources for.  Luckily, a homeowner can repair asphalt with relative ease.  New products have been developed that will hold up almost as well as your professional heated jobs will.

To do the repairs yourself you will need a cold patch repair kit.  These supplies can usually be found at building supply stores that sell items such as brick, mortar, and cement.  If you have a large home center in your area, chances are they will carry the items you need.  If you don¡¯t know what you need, the sales people in these stores should be able to point you in the right direction.

Preparation is key to a successful asphalt driveway patch.  Once you have the proper materials the damaged surfaces must be prepared.  For a pothole or large indentation you need to dig out all the cracking and crumbling asphalt.  Two inches is usually an adequate depth to dig, but you should go as far down as you need to go.

Always read the instructions on the cold patch material container before proceeding to the next step.  Most cold patch material manufacturer¡¯s recommend that the sides of the hole to repair should be as even and vertical as possible.  A hammer and a chisel will carve out the sides of the hole quite well.  After chiseling, be sure to clean out all of the debris; an air compressor or stiff bristled broom will usually do the job.

If you have a pothole that is deeper than the ideal two inches, you should fill it with gravel to bring the depth up to two inches.  When choosing gravel, be sure to use angular crushed gravel, as it will not move continually as some other types do.  You want gravel that will be a stable base for the patch.  Small crushed gravel of this nature will probably be available where you are able to purchase the cold repair kit.

Once you fill the hole, the gravel must be compacted.  You can rent a steel tamper if you are filling the hole by yourself.  The tamper is lighter and easier to use than an old 4x4 post.  Although, if you have someone to assist you, lifting a 4X4 and dropping it repeatedly on the gravel works just as well as the temper without the cost of the rental.

Now, you¡¯ll want to fill the hole with the cold patch material.  Make sure that there are no voids at the bottom of the hole.  Load it up about a quarter of an inch above the final surface height.  Use the steel tamper or 4x4 to compact the patch material.  After compacting the material it should be very close to level with the surrounding asphalt.  If you need more, repeat the loading up and compacting until it¡¯s about level.

The cold patch material will begin to cure immediately and will continue to cure as long as it¡¯s exposed to open air.  The curing process can take up to a month for the entire depth of the patch to cure.  Be sure not to seal this area for at least a month, as sealing it will block the airflow and the curing process will take much longer.

The cold patch material usually comes in a bucket or tub of some sort that will reseal.  Cover it well and put it away until next year!  You just might need it!
