If you plan to install a home surround sound system, you might hear better results if you install two or more speakers on the walls. Side and rear speakers play more realistic ambient noises if they are mounted at least six feet high on the wall so that their sound is not hidden by other objects in the room. Wall speaker installations can be relatively easy, taking less than an hour in most cases. The goal for all installations is for the speakers to be unobtrusive so that they are heard and not particularly noticed. They don¡¯t have to be hidden, but you don¡¯t want bulky speakers obstructing a walking area. 

There are numerous kinds of surround sound systems on the market, so there is a large variety of speaker arrangements. The most common speaker setups include some combination of a front center speaker, a back center speaker, a subwoofer, two to four side speakers, and two to four front and rear speakers. Let's examine each:

The front center channel is usually the speaker or speakers that come with your television. Most home stereo systems are set up around the TV so that the surround sound system can play audio tracks and TV shows or movies. The TV speakers are usually sufficient for the center channel. 

If your surround sound system employs a back center speaker (such as in a 7.1 system), then this may be the first speaker that could be successfully mounted on a wall. The back center channel needs to be at least three feet off the floor, and you may hear better results if you place it over six feet high on the wall. The rear center channel plays dialog or ambient sounds, so an optimal installation is high on the wall, facing down toward the main sitting area. Since the rear center channel is usually smaller than 6 x 9 inches and comes with a mounting bracket, you can probably simply screw it onto the wall. If it doesn't come with a mounting bracket, see the side speaker installation instructions below. 

Many surround sound systems have a subwoofer that dramatically improves the low frequency performance of the system. Thankfully, low frequencies are unidirectional so the subwoofer can be installed virtually anywhere in the room. The subwoofer sounds best when placed on the floor, close to a wall or in a corner. If there is no other room, the subwoofer can be placed under a table. 

Most surround sound systems employ two front speakers that play in stereo. These speakers are often big enough to be placed on the floor or on speaker stands. Many people place them beside the TV on bookshelves or whatever furniture is available. If you want to install them higher on the wall and they don¡¯t come with mounting brackets, there are a couple of easy solutions. The same mounting solutions apply to side/rear speakers, as well. 

First, several online audio companies such as Crutchfield, and many local stereo stores sell special brackets for mounting speakers on the wall. Most of the time these brackets require only a screwdriver. Some bracket kits require you to drill pilot holes. If your wall is made out of something other than drywall or wood, then you should seek assistance from someone at a local audio or hardware store. For example, if you're mounting the speakers onto natural stone or brick, then you'll need a drill, a masonry drill bit, and special masonry bolts. 

Another simple wall mounting solution is to buy "L" shaped wall mounting brackets from a local hardware store. Then you can cut a small piece of wood to form a miniature shelf the size of the speaker.

If you want a more permanent solution for a drywall or plaster/adobe wall, you can always cut out and frame a special cutout for the speakers. This obviously takes a lot more time and work. You'll need to measure out a recessed cubicle big enough for each speaker. Since it may look strange to have only a speaker in the hole, you can either cover the front of the cubicle with an attractive screen material, or you can plan larger holes that incorporate other decorative items. 

To cut the holes in drywall, first locate the studs to be sure you don't cut into one. A reciprocating saw or jig saw works best. Once you've cut through the drywall, frame up the sides with pieces of 2 x 4 or whatever size of wood fits best. Nail the wood to supporting studs where possible. Make sure you give the bottom of the cubicle enough strength to support the weight of the speakers or whatever else you plan to put in the cubicle. Then either paint the inside of the cubicle or cut and install small pieces of drywall inside the opening. 

Another creative installation for small side/rear speakers is to install them in the ceiling. Look in the lighting section of local hardware stores for special tubular cavities that you can install in the ceiling. You should be able to install a mesh cover or speaker grill flush with the ceiling. 

When you have finished installing your speakers on the walls, the final step is to hide the speaker wires. Some audio companies sell special hollow strips that can be painted the wall's color. You can also loosen floor or ceiling trim and lay the speaker wires inside the trim. Some companies sell very flat or small high-quality speaker wires. A more difficult but attractive solution is to run the speaker wires inside the drywall. However, if there is a long distance between the stereo amplifier/receiver and the wall speakers, then this solution may not be possible without major cutting and dry walling. If there is a short distance, you may be able to remove a wall outlet and pass the speaker wires along the house wiring to the next outlet.
