For an increasing number of households, a home theater has become an affordable way to entertain the family as well as friends.  Just as we desire with any room in our homes, we want to be able to maintain a space that is visually appealing, and easy to keep clean.   One very key component in accomplishing both those aims is selecting the right carpet for your home theater.

When evaluating the carpet that is ideal for your home theater, there are five key elements to consider:  style, construction, ease of installation, acoustical support, and cost.

The style or pattern of your carpet will depend a great deal on what type of atmosphere you wish to create within your home theater.  If the mood you are going for is wild and colorful, then go with something that has bright colors.  If you want something that is more subdued, consider a muted darker color.  If the idea is to convey a feeling of being in a public movie theater, there are companies that sell smaller versions of the brightly patterned but dark background styles that are a staple in theaters across the country.   Whatever your choice, make sure the pattern or style you choose is in keeping with the rest of the d¨¦cor in your home theater.

Next, consider the construction of the carpet.  Make sure to pick nylon or a nylon blend that will retain the integrity of its original color scheme, even after a number of steam cleanings and rounds of vacuuming.  If you plan on allowing your guests the honor of consuming the usual popcorn, sodas, and candy in your home theater, you would be wise to select a grade of carpet that has been treated for stain resistance.  While carpets that have been treated for stains do cost more per square foot, the time you save on cleaning alone will justify the difference.  

In addition, play close attention to the nap of the carpet.  While it is true that a higher nap feels nice to the bare feet, it also will mean lugging out the big vacuum every time you have a crumb or two accumulate in the nap.  By choosing a shorter nap, you will most likely be able to give your carpet a quick once-over with a carpet sweeper several times before brining in the vacuum cleaner.  

How easy your carpet will be to install in your home theater is your third consideration.  Based on the dimensions of your room, the area you wish to cover and the type of flooring presently in the room, select your carpeting so that it will be easy to install within your space.  Consider how the carpet will affix to the floor; will the carpeting require some sort of padding, as would be the case with a concrete floor?   What will be involved to prevent the carper from stretching unduly as the climate changes in your home theater during the year?  How easy can the carpet be adjusted and realigned, should you choose to rearrange your theater?  

Just as you have selected drapery panels that help prevent an echo effect with your acoustics, you want to do the same with your carpet.  Make sure that the carpet is sufficiently thick and large enough to work well with the other elements in your home theater to ensure that the listening experience for everyone is excellent, whether you are viewing a film by yourself or surrounded by twenty other people.

Lastly, pay attention to that bottom line.  The whole idea of having a home theater is so you and your loved ones have a sanctuary from the outside world, not to sit in a room and wonder how you are going to ever pay off that loan you took out to create it.  Be realistic about what you can spend on each of the elements in your home theater, including your carpet.  The great news is that high quality carpets in a variety of styles and colors are more affordable today than they have been in years.  As an added bonus, it is possible you might be able to locate a carpet remnant that will work very well for your home theater, allowing you to have a nicer carpet for less money.  Remember, quality does not always have to come with a big price tag, so don¡¯t be shy about shopping around once you have an idea of what you want.

Selecting the right carpet for your home theater is not a hard process, and need not be one that is particularly time consuming.  With just a little investigation on the front end, you can considerably save on time and money, and still own a carpet that will serve you for many years and many films to come.
