Household tasks requiring tools can spring up surprisingly.  Do you have the right tool at hand to solve the basic problems that arise from home ownership?  A properly stocked toolbox is a necessary investment for facing the day-to-day mishaps that face the contemporary householder: leaky faucets, loose banisters and stuck windows.

A toolbox should be stocked to meet your most basic needs.  Do you need to make basic household repairs?  Are you going to be fixing a lot of plumbing?  Is fixing cars your hobby?  Are you doing framing or masonry?  Your toolbox should reflect your personality.

When choosing tools, it is best to spring for the higher quality tools.  You purchase a tool for life, not just for a specific task.  It is better to spend five dollars on a nice screwdriver that will last twenty to thirty years than to spend five dollars on five one dollar screwdrivers that will break when you need them most.  Many quality hand tools come with lifetime warranties, making their initial cost worthwhile.

To protect, store and organize your tools, a toolbox or a workbench is a necessity.  Keeping your tools organized in one convenient location is a time and stress saving measure.  In addition, a leather tool belt is a convenient way to keep your tools at your side handsfree while performing your tasks.  

The average homeowner will need the following tools: screwdrivers, a hammer, tape measure, a utility knife, clamp, a wood saw, wrenches, and pliers.

Screwdrivers: Every household should have a minimum of four different screwdrivers: flathead, hex, phillips and square head.  Look for screwdrivers with comfortable grips.  You can buy sets of screwdrivers with differing heads, lengths and size.  This is recommended over purchasing a screwdriver with interchangeable heads, which can get lost or misplaced.

Hammers: If you only have room for one hammer, it is recommended that you purchase a sixteen ounce claw hammer.  Ideally, a hammer should be one that is comfortable to grip and have enough weight to drive in nails.  If doing work besides driving in carpentry nails - roofing, for example - you should purchase a hammer designed expressly for that task.

Tape Measure: This is a very important tool: remember the old adage, measure twice, cut once.  Buy at least a twenty-five foot tape measure.

Utility Knife:  A sturdy metal utility knife with replaceable razor blades is best.   A utility knife should have a comfortable grip and adjustable blade lengths.  This tool is one of the most versatile in your tool belt; you will use it to cut boxes, cut drywall, mark lumber, among other tasks.

Clamps:  Clamps are useful for tasks such as gluing woodwork or holding items steady.  Every toolbox should have a few C-clamps of various sizes.  

Saws: Ideally, like with hammers, you should have a saw for every type of situation.  If you only have room for one saw, a basic general purpose crosscut saw will do.  A crosscut saw is designed to cut on both the down and the upstroke, and is excellent for the most basic of household carpentry chores.

Wrenches: An adjustable eight inch wrench is ideal for beginners.  If you intend on doing a lot of plumbing, a larger monkey wrench is also a worthwhile investment.

Pliers: A pair of nonadjustable needle nose and curved jaw pliers is recommended.  Avoid the older adjustable pliers, known as knuckle busters, as they tend to slip.
