The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had to adopt a new term in the latter part of the last century. This term, "sick building syndrome", or "SBS", describes many symptoms of illness that are associated with working in a building that has poor air quality. Symptoms can include headache, coughing, a queasy stomach, and fatigue. Even though the syndrome was directed at working environments, your home can suffer from inadequate air ventilation as well. Tobacco smoke, pet hair and dander, household dust, mold spores, smoke from a woodstove, bacteria, and various strains of viruses can pollute the air inside your house.  This pollution can be especially high in the wintertime when your house is closed up.    

Changing your furnace filter on a regular basis, for example, can help to control the amount of dust in your house, but installing a UV home air sanitizer can help you and your family breathe cleaner, relatively germ-free air. Because, bacteria, viruses, and mold spores can pass right through a filter. But, a "UV", or "ultra violet" air sanitizer uses a strong light to actually clean and sanitize the air in your home. This type of sanitizer is usually installed in the central air conditioning or heating unit of your home. As the unit is run, air passes through the sanitizer, and the ultra violet light kills bacteria, mold spores, dust mites, and some types of viruses. Depending on its size, as well as the size of your house, one ultra violet home air sanitizer might clean the air satisfactorily. If you live in a large home, though, you might need to install two sanitizers. 

In order to install an ultra violet home air sanitizer, you'll need to read and follow the manufacturer's directions. Failure to follow these instructions can and will void the warranty on the product. And, if you don't install the unit properly, it might not work like it's supposed to.  

Basically, you'll need to find the return air duct on the furnace in your house. (This type of air sanitizer can also be installed on the central air conditioning unit in your house.) You'll then need to put on protective eyewear. Use an electric drill and the proper -sized bits to bore holes into the air duct, according to the manufacturer's directions. These holes will be used to insert the home air sanitizer into the duct. 

The next step is to position the unit onto the furnace air duct, then secure it down by using the screws that came with the air sanitizer. Finally, place the ultra violet bulb into the base, and your home air sanitizer is installed and ready for use. Plug the unit into a standard, household electrical outlet. Then, look into the furnace duct to make sure that the ultra violet bulb is on and is working properly.      

Now, every time the furnace or air conditioning unit in your house runs through a cycle, the air that passes through the unit will also pass through the ultra violet light. In turn, the UV light will clean and sterilize the air in your house.  

Finally, the maintenance on your new air sanitizer is relatively simple. Check the ultra violet bulb periodically to make sure it is working properly. And, when the bulb burns out, replace it with a new one.
