If you have a pet that requires access to the outside, you may decide a pet door is the best way to do this. Putting a hole in a wall will require repair before selling the house. Apartment complexes do not allow holes in the walls.
Installing a pet door into a sliding glass door is a good decision and will allow you and your pet to live without destruction to your home or a disagreement with your landlord. Pet doors do not require you to be with the animal when it wishes to go outside. The animal has the freedom to go in and out of the house as it wishes and gives you the convenience of having a self-sufficient animal, at least in this aspect.
The sliding glass door will close and if you have attached the locking mechanism, will lock into the pet door. Placing the pet door at the moving side of the sliding glass door will allow you to remove it easily when you move or go on vacation. There will be no need to remove the insulation from the permanent glass door panel and it is easier to install on the opposite side of the door.
Process:
1. Open the sliding glass door.
2. Clean the track of the sliding glass door track. Dirt or rocks may make it difficult for the pet door to fit snugly on the tracks.
3. Remove the lock for the sliding glass door and place the pieces in a place to be easily found at a later date. The lock will keep the pet door from fitting into the wall. You may want to replace the lock at a later time, so placing it in a bag with a label, then a drawer will make this easier.
4. Attack locking mechanism to the side of the pet door that will meet the sliding glass door. Not all doors will come with a locking mechanism. Be sure to empty the box your pet door came to find the pieces if they are included.
5. Loosen knob at top of pet door that will connect to the wall. This step may not be necessary if there are no knobs on your pet door.
6. Some doors come with a removable door the size of the opening for the pets to go through. This door will allow you to keep an animal outside and prevent anyone from climbing into your house through the pet door while you are at work. Be sure this is on the side facing you, so that it will be inside the house when installation is complete.
7. Using both hands to steady the pet door, lift it into the frame of the sliding glass door, top first. The top of the pet door fits onto the track at the top of the sliding glass door. The top should contain springs that will move and allow you to set the bottom of the door into the bottom of the track.
8. Push the pet door flush with the wall. The pet door will move easily if you have placed it correctly into the sliding glass door.
9. Tighten the knob at the top of the pet door. This will help tighten the door in place. |
