A hanging ceiling pendant light, or a swag light, as they are sometimes called, can change a boring light bulb fixture into an eye catching item of beauty. Or, they can add a source of lighting to a room that has no permanent fixture. Pendant lights come in all different shapes, colors, styles, and patterns. The most popular styles resemble Tiffany lamps, or, they look like chandeliers. Pendant lights are readily available at your local home supply store. They normally range in price from under fifty dollars to several hundred dollars.

In order to install a hanging ceiling pendant light, you can usually choose one of two ways. You can either temporarily or permanently install it. A ceiling pendant light comes from the manufacturer with an electrical supply that has two bare wires. If you¡¯re going to install the light temporarily as a hanging swag, then you'll need to purchase an electrical plug, a longer piece of wire and extra decorative metal chain. The length of the wire and the decorative chain you'll need will be determined by the distance from where your pendant light is going to hang on the ceiling to the location of the nearest electrical outlet. Measure that distance, add an additional foot so the wire has a sufficient amount of slack, and you'll know how much you need to purchase.       

Be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions so that you will achieve the best results. You'll need to remove the original electrical supply wire from your light. Then, attach the new length of wire, and secure the plug onto the end of the wire. Then, you'll need to feed the wire through the links of the decorative chain by going in one side and out the other. Your new pendant light is now ready to hang on a sturdy ceiling hook, and be plugged in for use. 

Installing your new light in this way does have its advantages. One advantage is that whenever you need to clean the light, you can easily take it down from its ceiling hook to work on it. The second advantage is, that if you move from your house, you can take the hanging ceiling pendant light with you and use it in your new home.       

If, on the other hand, you want to permanently install your new light, it will come pretty much assembled. There may be some glass pieces or other decorative parts that need to be added to it. Once that is done, you can begin to complete the wiring part of the light. This process requires some basic electrical skills, a wire cutter, a screwdriver, electrical tape, and the materials that came included with your pendant light. 

You'll need to first shut off the power to the existing light fixture at the circuit breaker box or the fuse box. Then, you'll need to remove the fixture, but leave the electrical supply wires. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions that came with your new pendant light so it will be installed correctly. Basically, though, you'll need to attach a support and the new fixture to the outlet box in the ceiling. You'll also need to attach the electrical supply wires to the wires on your new hanging ceiling light. Finally, you'll secure the light to the ceiling, screw in one or more suitable light bulbs - make sure that you don't use bulbs that are too high than the recommended wattage- and you are practically done with this project. Turn the electricity back on to the ceiling fixture, and your new light should work for years to come!
