Even though every homeowner should periodically check the condition of the hot water heater in their home, this task is often forgotten. Until you find out your tank is leaking water all over your basement, that is. That's the time, unfortunately, when your hot water heater demands your immediate attention.

If this scenario ever happens to you, the two most important things to do are to STAY CALM, and to ACT QUICKLY. Immediately go to your basement (or other applicable area) and locate your electrical breaker box IF your water heater operates with electric. (If you live in an older house, it might actually have a fuse box instead.) Find the breaker or the fuse that provides the electricity to your hot water heater, and shut it off. TRY HARD to stay out of the flooding water so that you don't risk getting burnt by hot water, or shocked by the electricity. You will need to have the electricity turned off anyhow, so you can replace your hot water heater. If, however, your hot water heater operates with natural gas, then you'll need to turn the gas valve off instead.         

The next step is to locate the valve on the cold water supply line that runs into the heater. This valve will be located in a line above the top of the water heater. It should either be marked "Cold" or it will be blue in color. When you have found the proper valve, shut it off tightly. 

Even if the water has stopped running out of your hot water heater, it still may not be quite empty. The next step then is to finish emptying, or check to make sure, the tank is completely out of water. To do this, you will need to locate the drain valve. It's usually located near the bottom of the water heater on the front side. But, don't open the valve yet! First, you have to make sure that there's a drain nearby to run the water away. Or, maybe the valve is set up so a garden hose can be attached to it. In that case, screw a garden hose on end and run the other end of the hose either to a drain, to a low window, or out the door.                

While the water heater tank is draining, you can use a vacuum that is specially designed to suck up water to clean up any mess that is on your basement floor.   

Now, it's time to purchase a new replacement hot water heater from your local home supply store. Water heaters come in different gallon sizes. If your existing tank performed well and delivered a sufficient amount of hot water on demand, then you'll probably want to replace it with the same size tank. On the other hand, if your existing water heater couldn't keep up with the demands you and your family placed on it, you should consider moving up to a larger gallon - sized tank. The electrical wiring that operates the tank, if it's electric, will probably need to be upgraded to a larger size, too. You can probably perform this rewiring task yourself. If not, then you should contact a licensed electrician in your area to do the job.        

The next step is to uninstall your existing heater. You'll basically need to unhook wiring, water supply pipes, et cetera. Then, if you have a lot of manpower, or, if you have a heavy duty appliance dolly, you can remove the water heater from your basement. Otherwise, you and some helpers can just move it from its spot and remove it later. 

Finally, you'll need to install your new replacement hot water heater. In order to achieve the best results, be sure that you read and follow the owner's manual that is included with your new heater. And, before you put your new tank into service, remember to turn the electricity or the natural gas back on to it.
