Shopping for household appliances can get expensive. Large appliances like refrigerators, oven/ranges, dishwashers, washer and dryers are essential to have in your home, but they tend to be costly. Purchasing new appliances for every part of your house is not necessary. There are some appliances that you may be able to purchase used at a lower price. Most consumers prefer new appliances in their home because the manufacturer backs them and they have a warranty. If you buy used appliances from a store or business the appliance usually comes with some sort of warranty because it has either been refurbished or inspected by the company. Buying used appliances from classified ads, out of the newspaper or at garage sales can be more risky.
Some of the reasons that make sense to buy used appliances are:
Finances. If your budget is tight and something breaks down like your refrigerator then you might be able to find a used one that is in excellent condition. You are sure to save a lot of money by buying used instead of forking out the bucks for a brand new fridge.
Relocating. If you are moving and you don¡¯t have room to take your current appliance to the new location, you might want to consider selling the item and buying another used one to replace it. This could help you break even on your purchase.
Newly weds or College Students. Most young people have a space issue. If you need appliances like a washer and dryer or a refrigerator but you don¡¯t have enough room for a nice full size model then you might want to consider buying something used to satisfy your immediate needs until you can buy a house and get a new full-sized model.
The appliances that usually are the best if you have to buy used are things like refrigerators, a washer and dryer and microwaves. These items are easy to maintain and usually don¡¯t show a lot of wear and tear if the previous owner has used them properly. With ovens and ranges it usually more difficult to detect defects and they are much harder to clean after someone has used them and not taken care of them. Depreciation plays a big part when selling and purchasing appliances. You can get a name brand appliance that is used for much less then you would pay for a new item. Usually you should only plan on paying about half of the retail cost of the appliance depending on how old it is.
When you are shopping for a used appliance whether it is at a consignment sale, an auction, the flea market or in the classifieds you should educate yourself on the value of the item. Know your facts about name brands and retail prices. If you are knowledgeable about the product then you will have the power to negotiate a fair and reasonable price. If you don¡¯t know anything about the appliance that you are trying to purchase then you will more than likely pay too much or get something that is not in top working order.
