Whether you live in a small apartment or just don¡¯t have a lot of room in your kitchen, you may think that you don¡¯t have the space for a dishwasher.  However, with more dishwasher options available for small spaces than ever before, you don¡¯t have to give up the convenience of automatic dishwashing.  Your space-saving options can be broken down into portable and countertop dishwashers. 

PORTABLE DISHWASHERS

Portable dishwashers are dishwashers that you do not have to install in your kitchen.  They have wheels so that they are easily moved from place to place and an easy clip-on hose set-up that attaches to a kitchen faucet when it¡¯s time to wash the dishes.  They vary in size from half the size of a standard dishwasher to the same size as smaller installed dishwashers.  Some portable models are designed so that they can later be installed in a kitchen by removing the wheels and purchasing an additional hose package.  This is something to consider when buying a portable dishwasher; do you want it to be an investment for future kitchen remodeling needs?

COUNTERTOP DISHWASHERS

Compared to portable dishwashers, countertop models are primarily cheaper.  They are also at least half the size of a portable dishwasher, since they are quite literally designed to rest on your countertop.  Be warned, though, that they can still be large enough that they won¡¯t fit in all spaces, especially when they must slide under low-hanging cabinets.  If space doesn¡¯t allow you to actually place a countertop dishwasher on the counter, placing it on a wheeled microwave stand or a similar cart might be an option.  Then you will have the space and cost savings of a countertop model with the storage advantages of a portable.  Countertop dishwashers also connect to the kitchen faucet with a clip-on hose set-up, making it easy to start a wash cycle.  

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING

Countertop dishwashers and some smaller portable dishwashers don¡¯t always have the ability to heat the water coming out of the faucet, so before buying one, you¡¯ll want to make sure that your tap water can reach a sufficient temperature to properly clean and sanitize dishes.  If you¡¯re concerned about your hot water heater¡¯s ability to do this, then look for dishwashers with internal heaters.

Countertop dishwashers only have a spraying arm at the bottom of the appliance, which is usually fine within their small space.  Some portable dishwashers have spraying arms at both the top and bottom and others only have a bottom arm.  Consider how heavily soiled your dishes are likely to be to determine whether you require a second spraying arm in your portable dishwasher.  If you think that you¡¯ll really need that extra cleaning power, then dual spraying arms are the way to go.

Before deciding which type of smaller dishwasher you want to buy, consider your dishwashing needs.  Countertop models work best if you don¡¯t produce a lot of dishes all at once.  If you only use a few plates and cups during the day, then a portable model would be overkill.  Do you use a lot of pots and pans?  Then the countertop model might not be for you, since they will fill up the small space so quickly, leaving you running a wash cycle for two or three items.  The more people you have in your household, the more likely a portable is the best choice for you, while countertop models can be ideal for singles and couples.
