The size and layout of your kitchen are important factors to consider when you begin shopping for a dishwasher. Beyond that, price is one of the most important considerations for most people. With the huge number of brands and models currently available, it can be an overwhelming challenge to find a dishwasher that suits both your needs and your budget.
To make sure you get the most for your money, think carefully about the following categories before you even set foot in a store.
Size: Most dishwashers hold twelve place settings, but many have an even greater capacity. To determine the size you need, think about the amount of dirty dishes you tend to produce. Quite simply, people with large families or those who cook often will need a bigger dishwasher. The danger of buying a dishwasher that is too small is that you will have to go the trouble or loading and unloading it more frequently. Even worse, it will greatly increase your utility bills.
Quietness: In the last years, dishwasher manufacturers have worked hard to come up with machines that don’t make a lot of noise. In general, the quieter a dishwasher is, the more expensive it will be. To determine whether you need this pricey feature, think about how often you are actually in your kitchen when the dishwasher is running. If you tend to watch TV, talk on the phone, or eat meals in the kitchen, then the extra cost will probably be worth it.
Energy efficiency: Happily, the government has made it easy to identify energy efficient dishwashers. All machines should carry a yellow label that estimates utility charges for annual usage. If you are especially concerned for the environment, look for a special star on the label. While it probably won’t save you a great deal in energy charges, it will certainly conserve both energy and water.
Special features: There are dozens of special features available, some of which are more important than others. A common feature is specialized cycling (the pots and pans cycle, for instance, or the china cycle). These are great for people who don’t care to wash such items by hand. Another important feature is the safety lock, an invaluable tool to those with small children. Finally, delay start is a popular special feature. It allows you to set program the machine to start at a later time (like when you are out of the kitchen).
There are several other factors that will affect the cost of your dishwasher that have little to do with the particular model you choose. Be sure that you have considered these hidden costs before you sign the sales slip.
Installation costs: The amount of money you’ll have to fork over for installation can vary considerably. Many larger stores offer their own installation service at a reasonable rate. If you are shopping in a store that doesn’t, you will need to call a plumber to get an estimate.
A word of warning to those involved with kitchen remodeling: you will probably need to hire an electrician, which will up your expenses even further. Do your research before you buy.
Delivery charge: Unless you own a truck or have access to another oversized vehicle, you will likely need someone to bring your new dishwasher to your home. Some stores offer this service at a flat rate; others charge according to your proximity to the store.
Warranty: Warranties vary considerably depending upon the brand and store. The most common warranty duration is one year, and in some cases extended warranties are available for an extra charge. Examine the terms of the warranty carefully before you make a decision. |
