Next to picking out and purchasing furniture, buying carpet is probably the most costly household expense you'll have when it comes to furnishing your home. Of course, paying for the actual carpet is only a part of the cost. There's also padding to buy, and then, the installation is going to cost you even more money if you have it done professionally. With everyone trying to cut down on expenses nowadays, you might be wondering how you can possibly reduce the cost of having new carpet installed. As the saying "you get what you pay for" goes, you should stay away from carpet that is very cheap in price. These carpets can be either factory seconds or rejects that are inferior in their quality. Carpet padding is priced the same way. There are usually three or four grades of padding, and the more expensive grade usually wears better and lasts longer. 

So, basically, the only part of purchasing new carpet that you can possibly save a significant amount of money on, is the installation. And, the cheapest installation could cost you nothing if you do it yourself. But, as it has already been shown, the cheapest is not always the best. But, how can you make the right choice?

The average price of a carpet installation in the United States varies by region. It also depends on the type of professional installer that you hire. Any basic, professional installer should have the knowledge on how to use a knee kicker and a power stretcher. They should know how to lay down padding without bumps and bulges resulting. They should also know how to remove and reinstall baseboards, and cut out objects in the floor such as furnace registers. But, what if the carpet you have picked out and purchased is a Berber type, is extra plush, or needs seams put together? You might well have to pay more to find an installer that has the added skills you need to get the job done right.      

Professional carpet installers normally charge a certain amount of money per square yard of padding and carpet they lay. This means, for example, that if you have a room that measures twenty feet by twenty feet square, you'll need to purchase four hundred square feet of carpet and padding. Since they come in square yards, not feet, you'll then have to divide that number by nine, the number of square feet in a yard. Therefore, if a professional installer is going to charge you five dollars a square yard to install the carpet alone, and you purchased forty-five yards of carpet, then that's going to cost you two hundred and twenty-five dollars. Plus, add the cost of installing the padding. Some carpet installers will give you the choice of clearing the room of the old carpet and padding, furniture, et cetera. If you clear the room, then it costs you nothing, but if they have to clear the room, they will tack on an added charge. That's something else to consider.     

So, in order to decide whether to do-it-yourself or hire a professional carpet installer, you must ask yourself these questions: 

Do I have the ability and the skills to lay the carpet and padding down in accordance with the manufacturer¡¯s specifications? If they are not properly installed, the warranty could be easily voided. 

Do I know how to properly stretch carpet and padding and secure it down by using tack strips or glue? 

Do I know how to lay the carpet down around odd-shaped corners? Do I know how to secure seams together properly? Carpet and padding can be purchase in either twelve or fifteen foot widths. If the room you are working in is smaller or wider than either measurement, then you'll need to add to or cut down the width of the new carpet.   

Do I have the proper tools I'll need, or will I need to rent a knee kicker and a power stretcher? That will add on an additional rental cost. 

All in all, if you have the ability and the skills to install the carpet and padding yourself, you can save yourself valuable money. On the other hand, you could save yourself time and stress if you simply hire a professional installer and let him or her do the job for you.
