Identifying problems with your air conditioner can be tricky. Knowing when not to try to handle the problem yourself can be even trickier. In this article you will find air conditioner problems, their likely causes, and whether or not to try to fix it yourself. 

There are two basic types of air conditioner units. The window unit and the central unit. First, we are going to talk about window units.

At times the air conditioner may run; however, the air coming from it is not cool. The first thing you should check is the filter. This can be done by removing the front grill and either cleaning or replacing the filter. Make sure the filter is in place correctly before reconnecting the grill. Your evaporator or condenser coils could also be dirty or clogged. As long as you are careful not to bend them, you can either vacuum them or use a toothbrush to clean them. If there is something blocking the air flow it can cause the unit not to cool. Sometimes, just moving the air conditioner to another spot in your home can correct this. If these do not correct the problem it¡¯s time to call your repairman. More than likely, you have either a defective fan motor or fan compressor.

If your unit is running but not blowing any air at all, immediately call your repairman. This is a signal of a bad motor and is not a repair you will want to attempt yourself. 

It is normal for most window air conditioners to leak some. This is how they get rid of condensation. If your unit is leaking excessively, make sure the unit is correctly installed. The unit should be slightly tilted toward the outside so that the water will have a place to drain to. 

A dirty air filter can cause ice to form on the unit¡¯s coils. If this occurs, you will want to clean the filter. Outside temperatures below 60 degrees can also cause ice to form. A trick to correct this is to turn your unit to the fan position and let it run until the ice melts. 

Lastly, if your air conditioner is making a rattling noise, your fan is probably loose. Open it up and tighten the screw that is located in the center of the fan. If this does not correct the rattling noise, call your repairman.

The repairs you can do yourself are somewhat more limited on central air conditioner units. Most are going to require a professional. Knowing the things that can cause problems for central units should help you decide.

If your central air conditioning unit is not running at all, the first thing you should do is check the fuses and circuit breakers. Another thing you want to check is your temperature setting. The unit will not run if the setting is on a temperature that is higher than the room¡¯s temperature. For example, if your thermostat is set on 76 degrees and the temperature in the room is 74 degrees, the unit will not run. Always make sure you have the thermostat set on the temperature you want it to be. A lot of central air conditioning units come with a time delay safety device that will help prevent the unit from overloading. This can temporarily cause the unit not to run. Give it a few minutes and then try it again. If this doesn¡¯t work, the safety device could be defective. In this case, call your repairman. 

Excessive leaking can be caused by a build up of algae in the pipes. This is generally something you can clean yourself. If your system uses a condensation pump, make sure it is plugged in and turned on. If these are not the problem, let your repairman handle it.

System freezing is normally caused by dirty coils. These have to be removed before they can be cleaned. Because removing them is an involved process, you will need to let your repairman clean them. A bad blower motor can also cause freezes. This is another problem that will need to be handled by a professional.

If the air coming from the unit is not cool, your system could need refrigerant. This should be handled by your repairman. You may also want to check to see if there is a problem with the air flow. This problem can be caused by a dirty air filter. Replacing this yourself may take care of it.
