One of the tasks that we often dread most is cleaning our bathroom shower fixtures. Over time they attract everything from rust to water and soap scum leaving our bathrooms an unsightly mess. You can easily tackle that mess however using a wide range of cleaning products made specifically for rust and scum or for those of us who are concerned with the harsh chemicals found in most cleaners there are a variety of alternative products around the home as well.  

There are many popular commercial cleaners for rust available on the market today ranging from abrasive to liquid form. 

Normally an abrasive cleaner is applied like a paste directly to the rust then allowed to set in before scrubbing. 

Liquid cleaners although only really effective on minimal rust stains, can be applied onto a cloth and rubbed into the affected area. Be sure to check the instructions since some cleaners might not work on all shower fixtures and could cause damage. 

For a safer and less expensive alternative, lemon juice can be affective on rust because of the acid in it. To use, apply the juice of the lemon to a scrubbing pad sponge and rub vigorously into the affected area. Repeat if necessary and rinse thoroughly with water.  

White Vinegar is another common household alternative for rust that can be applied in the same manner as the lemon juice with similar results.

You can also use an SOS pad to remove set in rust. SOS pads can be found almost anywhere cleaning supplies are sold. Since SOS pads are made of steel wool however, it is not recommended that you use them on stainless steel fixtures since it can scratch and remove the finish. 

If scum is the cause instead however, many popular bathroom cleaners are available for you to choose from and are specifically designed to your needs. Most scum cleaners are liquid based so they're easy to use by following the instructions on the container.  

If you're looking for an inexpensive or more environmentally safe way to get rid of scum, there are several household products you may already have handy at home that you can try. 

To break up stubborn soap scum from your shower fixtures, apply a non-sticking cooking spray to a cloth and wipe the troublesome area clean. You can also clean the scum with a used dryer sheet by rubbing the area with a little pressure until clean. 

Another way to eliminate scum is by filling a zip lock bag with vinegar, wrapping it around the showerhead fixture with a rubber band and leaving it overnight.

Baking soda formed into a paste with water can remove any stubborn scum and freshen your shower as well. Rub the mixture into the showerhead fixture with a sponge and rinse well with water.

Dishwasher detergent in both powder and liquid form is also said to clean scum from stainless steel fixtures. You can apply the detergent with a cloth or sponge then scrub the fixture and rinse thoroughly with water. 

You can clean stainless steel or chrome showerhead fixtures by spraying clear club soda on the affected area and wiping clean with a sponge or cloth.

Fabric softener believe it or not is another option you can try that is also said to keep scum from forming in the future. Simply apply the fabric softener with a cloth and rub into the fixture until clean. You can also eliminate future scum buildup by wiping down your showerhead fixture after every use. 

By using the above recommendations, you can not only eliminate your bathroom's unsightly mess, but keep the problem from rearing its ugly head a lot less often. Not only will your bathroom thank you for it, but so will your guests.
