Laminate flooring is an attractive flooring option for many homeowners.  It resists dents, gouges and fading from the sun, and it needs little maintenance, no waxing, special cleaners or stripping.  A weekly cleaning with a damp sponge will keep your floors looking new.  

Choosing which type of laminate flooring to install in your bathroom can be a little tricky.  Not all laminate flooring can be used in a bathroom.  Only laminates that have been treated with waterproof layers and installed properly will be covered by the manufactures¡¯ warranties.  However, with a little research you can pick a product that will last and bring style to your bathroom.  

Laminate Flooring Basics

Laminate flooring may look like tile, stone or wood, but it is really a composite material.  The top layer is a hard wearing layer, followed by a photographic image, a wood core usually made of MDF, and then a balancing layer that usually includes a water barrier.  

There are two different processes for bonding the layers together: HDL and DL.  HDL or high pressure laminates use two steps to bond the material and ends up with a thicker product that is more stable.  DL or direct laminates are joined in one pressing and work well in areas transitioning from one flooring material to a laminate.

Laminate flooring is not directly attached to the subfloor.  Rather, it uses a tongue and groove system to lock into place and then floats over the subfloor.  Some laminates also use glue between seams to ensure water does not seep through and damage the planks.

Laminates in the Bathroom

Since laminate flooring will warp with moisture, not all laminates can be used in the bathroom.  Be sure to check the manufactures¡¯ warranties to see if they cover bathroom installation.  Manufactures that use waterproof backing will usually cover use in the bathroom if all installation directions are followed carefully.  This usually requires silicone sealant along all seams and a 6 mil. polyethylene film to be placed on the subfloor.   

Picking Styles

Laminates come in several styles of tile, stone and wood.  Tile and stone designs come in a variety of colors and sizes, and some even have the look of grout between pieces.  Wood laminates come in dozens of wood grain patterns and colors.  

Before installing your flooring, decide on how you would like the pieces to be laid out.  You may choose to put the pieces at an angle or create an inlaid design by specially cutting the pieces.  When planning elaborate designs, plan on purchasing an additional 15% of materials.  Also, lay out your design before locking it into place.

Laminate Accessories 

Since laminate floors require a 1/4 inch expansion area along the perimeter, you will need to choose trim and transition pieces to cover this gap.  Many manufactures offer matching moldings, transitions strips, end caps and stair nosings.  Some manufacturers even make matching floor registers.  However, you can also choose to use traditional wood trim.
