Well, the old dryer finally gave up the ghost. It's obsolete and the repairman says it's going to cost more to fix it than to buy a new one. So, a shopper has some looking to do. What is available these days on a dryer, and how much will it cost to replace the old one?
There are so many innovations in all kinds of technology, and laundry is no exception. Even the humble clothes dryer has gone high-tech. It all comes at a price, but a shopper has a lot to choose from. First, of course, she needs to determine her budget, and stick with it. She should also measure the space where the old dryer is and write that number down when she goes to the store to look. It would be awful to have a new dryer delivered and find it simply will not go into the space. It's also a given that, when she walks into the appliance store, she will say, "I never knew there were so many kinds of dryers!" Indeed.
Most people will want electric dryers, but most manufacturers make comparable models in gas-operated, as well. However, a shopper needs to know which kind she has before going to the store and ordering one.
A shopper will also need to determine what kind of dryer capacity she needs before starting the hunt. A woman with children will need a larger-capacity dryer. A single person or a couple can get by with a smaller model. Some dryers even come with a reversible door feature, so the owner can have the door open from right or left, depending on which is most convenient. dryers have all sorts of bells and whistles to dazzle the shopper. Some have a "quiet dry" feature which may be good for people who use the dryer at night, or when it is close to the family living areas, or for when the baby is asleep.
Some dryers have a sensor that senses how much moisture is still in the clothes, and adjusts the drying cycle and temperature accordingly. No more setting the timer and wondering how long it will take the clothes to dry. Now the dryer knows when to shut itself off!
Most dryers have at least three drying cycles, for permanent press, heavy loads (like jeans and towels) and normal loads. Nowdays, however, there are dryers that have up to eight drying cycles, for any kind of laundry load or composition. Many dryers also have settings that will get the clothes mostly dry or very dry, as well as variable temperature settings. Some dryers have sensors that automatically set the temperature and cool it down toward the end of the drying cycle, when the clothes are nearly dry, so as to save energy.
Dryers even have a wrinkle avoider. No time to take the clothes out now? Not to worry! Dryers now have functions that will fluff the clothes on air for a set period of time every so often, until the dryer is unloaded. Nifty, huh? There are even "drying centers" where the launderer can hang up clothes and have them dried as they hang. These drying centers, of course, come with a commensurate price for the convenience.
How much will all this technology cost? It used to be that dryers were cheaper than washing machines, but that has changed. However, basic dryers are still available for about $225. Add features and the price goes up accordingly. Some dryers hit the $800 mark and above. The average price is about $450. A shopper needs to make a list of must-have features and shop accordingly.
Some stores will offer both appliances at a substantial discount, if a shopper buys a washer and dryer together. If the old washer is getting elderly as well, this may be something to think about. However, a shopper should not allow herself to be talked into making a purchase she cannot afford, for extras she will not use. She's not saving money if she's not using all the features.
Features, size, price--all are important in shopping for a dryer. Whether in the store or online, a little research will help a shopper find the best price.
