With today¡¯s resources and technology, there are infinite ways to decorate a room, whatever your style preference. You can find ways to style and design that fit every imaginable price range. If you, like many people, are on a budget, you don¡¯t have a lot of money to be putting into d¨¦cor. Here, I will show you a few ideas that will subtly transform the feel of your bedroom, but not the weight of your pocketbook.
Let¡¯s start by taking a look at the general space of your bedroom. How do you feel when you walk in? Does it feel light, airy, cozy? Or do you get the urge to turn right back around and leave? The first step I like to do when starting a decorating project is to do some general cleaning and de-cluttering. This step alone can sometimes make a dramatic impact on the overall atmosphere of any room, and it¡¯s the least expensive way to do it. Does your bedroom seem to be a catchall for the rest of the house¡¯s misfits? Get it out of there, if it doesn¡¯t belong. When this is done, you should already be able to see at least a slight difference, and you can now start your decorating with a fresh palette.
First, let¡¯s look at the bed. Don¡¯t like those drab sheets? That¡¯s okay; as long as you keep your bed made, a new comforter may be all you need. This can dramatically change the look of a room, and you can buy them fairly inexpensively at your local discount department store. Even better, shop the thrift store and see what you can come up with. While you¡¯re at the thrift store, see if you can find a thin sheer or lacey blanket to lay over the top of the comforter for a more feminine look.
Here¡¯s a fun idea if you like where your bed is and you don¡¯t plan on moving it around all the time. Take some plant hooks and screw them into the ceiling, slightly to the outside of each corner of the bed. Hang some old but still pretty sheets or long sheer curtains from the hooks. If you have some, or can get some inexpensively, you could even lace some sheer curtains through some thin curtain rods and hang them across the hooks at the head and foot of the bed, creating a sort of canopy.
How about those walls? If they seem drab to you, but you can¡¯t fork out the money to paint, a simple border can spice things up. If you¡¯re crafty, you can even make your own stencil or stamp and create a border yourself. Use strips of colorful electrical tape to create ¡°frames,¡± borders or grids on your wall to hang your pictures in. Finally, a few well-placed framed mementos could be the perfect finishing touch to make your walls more pleasant to look at.
Jazz up your dresser or nightstand with some pillar candles bought from the local dollar store and some beads or gems bought inexpensively from the crafts store. Carefully take a lighter (a longer one used for fireplaces and such) and heat a spot on the candle until it softens, then firmly press in beads and gems to create your own design. Group candles of different sizes together on a plate or platter you no longer use. Add a few small silk flowers or pinecones around the bases of the candles. Add a favorite picture of a loved one slightly to the side.
What do you think of your windows? Buy some inexpensive plain curtains and jazz them up with a little embroidery. Or, if you¡¯re really crafty, make your own curtains altogether. If you love having the sunlight peeking in first thing in the morning, consider just putting up some sheers, which can be dyed to any tint you desire.
Even something as simple as a small bowl of potpourri or a vase with a few fresh flowers can do wonders to liven up your bedroom. Whether you do just one or all of these ideas, or whether they just spur you on to think of your own, I hope that the next time you walk into your bedroom you smile and have peace, not just from your bedroom but from your pocketbook, too.
