Having recently installed three differently styled tile floors in my home, I found that it was both challenging and rewarding.  There are so many patterns to see and so many different types of tiles to choose from.  Whether your design involves adding a splash of color or an entire floor full of color, you can make your home into a work of art.  Ceramic tiles can add elegance and style to any decor.

The first room my husband and I tiled was our laundry room.  We laid twelve inch by twelve inch tiles in a square.  This was a very classic tile pattern.  To be our first tiling project, we were very happy with the results.  If you decide on this design, be sure to start laying the tile at the center of your room.  Of course by the time we were close to the walls, we found that all of the tiles along the edge of the room had to be cut.  In the end it was worth the extra effort because the room turned out perfect.

The next room we decided to tackle was the kitchen.  We decided on a pinwheel design.  This was fun and difficult to achieve.  The look was great but it was a little tough cutting the tiles on a diagonal.    We chose twelve inch by twelve inch and six inch by six inch matching tiles and laid them in a pinwheel design (the big tile in the middle and small tiles on each corner of the big tile).   Be sure to find the center of the room before you begin placing these tiles and always keep watching to make sure your pattern is correct.

The last place we tiled was our entryway.  We chose solid colored six inch by six inch tiles accented with six inch by twelve inch mosaic tiles that were multi colored and had imprints of leaves and shells.  We laid the tiles out and used the accent tiles to make it look like the outline of a square rug.  This turned out great.   If you are interested in using accent tiles be careful of the cost.  Each one of these tiles cost over twelve dollars, but it was well worth the cost.   

Tiles come in almost any color and depending on your choice of grout color, can give you different looks.  The tiles we chose were oyster white with warm ivory grout.  This gave a flowing look to our floors.  If we had wanted the tiles to show a separation, we would have gone with a darker grout.  This would have shown a break in the pattern. 

Another thing to consider when laying your tile is how much space you want between your tiles.  We decided to use quarter inch spacers.  These are different size spacers to help you create the look you want.

When you begin your project you will find that some ceramic tiles have patterns on their surface and the colors vary.  For a color variance make sure you mix tiles out of all of your different boxes so that the colors blend properly.  You should purchase all of the tiles at one time and include extra tiles to ensure that you buy from the same pattern number, lot number, and dye number.

Tiles range in size from as large as twelve inch by twelve inch (or ever larger) to as small as one inch mosaic tiles.  The most popular size tile sold today is the four and one quarter inch square wall tile.

When you have decided on the floor that you want be sure that it compliments your home without dominating it.  Remember you will be living with your decision for a long time.
