Toasters and toaster ovens are useful appliances in any kitchen.  While basic toasting can be done in any toaster, a toaster oven is capable of many other food preparation jobs.  To make a wise choice, first consider what the toaster will be used for most of the time.

Making toast in a toaster oven can take twice as long as making it in a toaster, but the toaster oven can also be used to heat a frozen dinner or do a bit of baking.  Toaster ovens are more expensive, however.  A decent toaster can cost as little as $20, while a toaster oven can cost many times that amount.

Most toasters have some sort of dial or lever to select the desired shade of toast.  Some new toasters have updated this with digital displays and programmable functions that will ¡°remember¡± exactly how you like your toast.  Some toasters are equipped with a defrost setting which thaws bread before toasting it.  Another convenient setting to look for is warm/reheat, which will reheat cold toast, or warm bread without toasting it.  A ¡°bagel¡± setting means the toaster is able to toast only the cut side of the bagel.  Some toasters have a thermostat and automatic shut-off to prevent toast from burning.  A few toasters are even designed with a window through which you can view the toasting process.

A safety feature to look for when choosing a toaster is a cool-touch surface.  Also, look for a cancel button, which will allow you to stop the toasting process and eject the toast immediately, which is better for the toaster than forcing the lever up.

Wide slots are also a safety consideration.  It is dangerous to try to remove a stuck bagel by sticking a knife into the toaster.  You are likely to get a shock.  Always unplug the toaster if you must remove a stuck item.  Some toasters are equipped with a separate lift, which helps to safely remove stuck bread. 

For storage, consider how much space you have.  Is there an appliance garage available?  Be sure the toaster fits in the garage.  On several occasions, fires have resulted when the garage door rested on a toaster¡¯s ¡°on¡± button.  Some toasters now feature controls on a corner instead of the end or center, a detail that can increase your placement options.

Four slice toasters are nice for larger families, but take up more room on the counter.  If you wish to toast bagels or English muffins in a conventional toaster, make sure you pick one with wide slots.  If you frequently buy specialty breads, look for a model with long slots, which can accommodate two slices of toast at a time. 

A slide-out crumb tray makes cleaning easier.  If desired, look for a crumb tray that is dishwasher safe.  In general, a toaster is easier to keep clean than a toaster oven.

If you decide on a toaster oven, you can still make toast, but you¡¯ll find it useful for many other cooking tasks.  Some are designed with settings for different uses, such as pizza reheating or defrosting.  In addition, many toaster ovens are equipped with a broil setting.  This is useful for cooking burgers, fish fillets, or chicken breasts.  While these tasks can be done in the main oven, a toaster oven saves energy.  If the oven is equipped with convection or infrared heating, cooking time will be reduced as well.  A timer on a toaster oven is most useful if it goes to 60 minutes.

Some large toaster ovens are equipped with a rotisserie for cooking larger items, such as a whole chicken.  For the true enthusiast, special toaster oven cookbooks and cookware are on the market.  A large toaster oven can take the place of a conventional oven for anyone who doesn¡¯t have a lot of space.  Look to spend up to $200 for a well-equipped model. 

Desirable features for toaster ovens include a non-stick easy to clean interior and an electronic touchpad.  Continuous-cleaning models, designed to burn spills off as they happen, are easier to take care of, but any toaster oven will need to be wiped off inside and out from time to time.  Again, a removable crumb tray is a convenient feature.  Without it, the appliance will have to be shaken over the trashcan to clean out the crumbs.

Again, for safety, look for a cool-touch exterior surface, especially if there are children in the home.  Toaster ovens get hot on top, so don¡¯t plan to store anything on it.  Another nice feature is for the rack to slide forward any time you open the oven door.  This makes it easier to access your food and reduces the likelihood of getting a burn.  A bell to signal when the cooking time is up, coupled with an automatic shut-off, will reduce the chance of a kitchen fire resulting from forgetting to turn the oven off.  

To summarize, choose a toaster if you mainly are interested in toasting and heating breads.  Choose a toaster oven for more cooking options.
