Getting locked out of the house has happened to just about everyone at one time or another. Then you end up having to bother a neighbor for an extra key, breaking into your own home, or calling a family member home from work. 

But instead of resorting to these inconvenient options, why not hide a key where only you can find it? The next time you get locked out, you will be able to get right back in. Try these hiding locations:

1. Hammer a nail into the top of the side door or garage door lintel. (Use the front door if you must.) Have an extra key made with a hole for a key ring and slip it onto the nail. (Check first to be sure the key will easily come on and off. Tap the nail's protruding head until it bends to one side, effectively securing the key. You can either leave it loose enough to manipulate by hand if you need to get the key, or keep a hammer outdoors under the porch or another location to loosen then nail that way, if needed. 

2. Tape an extra key to the top of the front window frame if it protrudes enough for this use. Use electrical or any type of secure tape to keep the key in place. Push it down tightly against the top frame so that it cannot be seen with a casual glance. You may want to choose a window that is not the closest one to the door, in case an intruder should look there. Perhaps you could use a side window to further deter discovery. 

3. Use sticky black tape to secure the key to the underside of the doormat on the front or back porch. Use tape that is about the same color as the mat and attach it to a corner where it won't be felt underfoot as someone steps on the larger area. check periodically to be sure the key hasn't come untaped or become loosened. 

4. If you have evergreen shrubs in front of your house, consider using dark green tape to secure a key at the base of a shrub. Be sure the tape is the long-lasting kind, and place it low enough to avoid being seen by those who enter and leave your house. Only you should know it's there. Double-check from time to time to be sure the branch hasn't been nibbled by rodents or damaged by weather, and is still holding the key.

5. Wire the key to the underside of a piece of porch furniture. Use an item with slats and cushions, preferably, so the wire can be wrapped underneath the cushion from view. Use a flexible wire, about the strength of that used for paper clips, so the key can be detached when needed.

You may need to experiment with a variety of methods until you find the one that works best for you or one that you feel comfortable with. Other possibilities include attaching the key to a board under the porch, to a front or back yard tree branch, or under an eave of the shed roof, if you have one. Make it secure enough to avoid discovery or loss and convenient enough for ready access. Then you need not fear long hours spent in the cold or money spent to replace broken windows!
