With all the varied details associated with everyday living, changing smoke detector batteries may seem like another small trifle that is easy to overlook. But failing to keep your monitors in good working condition may expose your family to danger if a fire breaks out and the monitor's batteries are dead. Fatalities have occurred in such situations.

So when should you change the smoke detector's batteries? Here is a rundown of some possibilities to note on your calendar:

1. One year from the date of purchase of your current smoke detector batteries. For example, if you last changed the batteries in November, replace them the following November. You can write the change date in pencil on the monitor, or keep a list of change dates on file for quick reference. 

2. In the fall of the year. Many people update their smoke detectors in early fall, since that is when we begin spending more time indoors and start using the fireplace, a common source of house fires. You may want to designate September 1, October 1, or November 1 as the annual date on which you will replace the smoke detector's batteries.

3. On a specific date. Some folks replace all household equipment batteries on a certain date each year, such as January 1 (New Year's Day), one of the family member's birthdays (such as the person who will be changing the batteries), or when the season changes, as in the fall or spring equinox. Others use the date when clocks are turned back (in fall) or turned ahead (in spring). Choose a date that will be convenient for getting to the store for batteries, and easy to remember. 

4. When the detectors start flashing or beeping. Some smoke detectors have a built-in device that causes them to flash intermittently as the batteries begin to grow weak. Other units emit a rhythmic beep when batteries lose power. In still other cases, the small green or red light that stays on at all times will turn off, indicating that the batteries are no longer working. Find out how your smoke detectors are supposed to let you know that the batteries are dead. If your unit does not have this device, consider replacing your current units with new ones that do.

5. With a change of household environment or humidity. If you move to a different climate, you may want to replace old detector units with new ones that are better equipped to sense smoke in very dry, moist, warm, or cold air. If your ceiling has leaked and allowed moisture to enter the house, this may impact the detectors, along with rooms where windows that were left open allowed a lot of rain to beat in and perhaps dampen the atmosphere and creep into the walls. If something smoked despite a detector or even as a unit beeped, you may want to get new batteries or an entire new unit.
