A landscaped yard puts the finishing touches on the total outside look of your home. For this reason, whether they are naturally "green thumbs" or not, many homeowners are always on the look out for easy ideas on ways they can improve their yards. With the growing demands of work and family, many homeowners are also looking for yard improvement projects that can be completed in a weekend's time.  There are, of course, many weekend projects you can work on in order to improve the looks of your yard. Here are some popular landscape ideas:

Weekend Project 1

An easy way to expand your outdoor entertaining space is to build a brick patio. You can make it as large or as small as you need it to be. And, the cost is relatively inexpensive since the materials you need are few. 

Basically, to build a brick patio, you first need to measure and mark out the area you're going to use. Then, you need to dig out the square or rectangular area with a shovel to about four inches deep. Make sure the area is level and free from rocks, sticks, and other debris. Then, you lay down a pattern using bricks, mortar, and a trowel to fill in the area. Allow the mortar to dry undisturbed for a couple days. Follow the manufacturer's directions on the container in order to achieve the best results.       

Weekend Project 2

A functional, as well as an attractive addition to the landscaping in your yard, is a walk made out of stepping stones. In order to create a more personalized effect, you can even make the stones yourself. 

To do this, you will need either a frame made out of two by four pieces of wood, or some plastic, pre - formed patterns. You can purchase the latter at your local home improvement store. You will also need a bag or two or mortar, depending on how many stepping stones you are going to need to make. You can make your stepping stone walk extend out from the back door of your house to a patio, for example.      

Follow the directions on the mortar bag, and mix and fill the patterns or wood frame. Then, after they are thoroughly dry, remove the stepping stones and position them where you want them in your yard.       

Weekend Project 3

This project is much more attractive than functional, but a popular, easy way for you to landscape your yard in just a weekend's time. This project is to make a Rose garden. It can start out as a six by eight foot colorful garden that you plant in a weekend. Then, you can expand it, decorate it, or change it however you desire as time goes on. Just like the world famous Rose Garden that is located in Elizabeth Park in Hartford, Connecticut, your garden could end up ultimately becoming two plus acres of the beautiful plants. The Rose Garden has fifteen thousand plants and eight hundred varieties of roses in it. But, no matter how large or small yours may be, your rose garden can still be a showplace of your roses accented by trellises, a fence, a stepping stone path, and more!       

Weekend Project 4

If a Rose garden doesn't appeal to you, then maybe making a Butterfly Garden in your yard would interest you more. Depending on your location, you could attract Monarchs, Admirals, Skippers, Duskywings, Bluewings, and more! There are over seven hundred species of butterflies in the United States.

Butterflies are fun and interesting to watch as they go about their daily activities. These activities include transforming themselves from being fuzzy caterpillars to becoming beautiful butterflies!

Basically, you will need to locate a sunny spot in your yard. Then, you will need to choose and purchase several types of nectar - producing, as well as some host plants, for your garden in order to attract butterflies. Examples of some nectar - producing plants you may choose are Asters, Black-eyed Susans, Daylilies, and Phlox. And, some examples of host plants are Milkweed, Thistles, and Violets.

After you have cleared an area, arrange the plants in the ground in clumps instead of rows. You can then fence your butterfly garden in, or, you can surround the area with different sizes of rocks, et cetera, to set it apart from your yard.
