Hurricane Survival
If you live in an area that is prone to hurricanes, you should have a family survival plan in place in the event of a hurricane. Hurricanes contain high winds, flooding rain, and dangerous storm surges. In addition, any time a hurricane occurs there is a very good chance that the hurricane will also produce tornados. When you hear of the possibility of a hurricane, watch your local weather channel to determine the risk to you and your family. With a hurricane you do have some time to decide what you want to do. It takes several days before it can be determined where the hurricane will make land fall. If it turns out that you are in the path of the storm, you will have to decide what you will do.
If you plan on evacuating, you will want to secure your home before you leave by boarding up windows and securing things in your yard. Keep in mind that a hurricane can have winds of over one hundred miles per hour. Things will be blown away or destroyed if they are not secured in some way. Decide where you will go when you evacuate. Some choices might be family or friends in other areas or a shelter. Bring blankets, pillows, personal items and medications. These items should be packed and stored in the trunk of your car. Don¡¯t forget to make arrangements for your pets too. Leave several hours before the storm arrives since flooding rain normally occurs during hurricanes. Roads can be washed out or you could become trapped in your car.
If you plan on staying in your home be prepared to go in the basement. Don¡¯t stay in your home if you live in a trailer or mobile home. You will need supplies for at least two or three days for each member of your family. Food, water, flashlight, battery operated radio, and batteries are all very important items to have prepared. You should also have a well stocked first aid kit available. Be very careful if the power goes out and you have to use candles for light that the candles are out of the reach of children.
If you plan on going to a shelter you will want to bring a few things to the shelter to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Some items you will want to bring are a small supply of food, blankets, pillows, any medications that you need to take daily, personal items such as toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, baby items.
When the storm approaches, remain calm. If you have children, play a game or read a book. It is very important to try to keep the children¡¯s minds off the storm if at all possible. Never leave the shelter until you are informed that the danger has passed.
When you go back to your house, be very careful. Your home could be a very dangerous place at the moment. There could be severe damage to your home or power lines may be down. There may be broken glass or nails sticking up anywhere. Keep your children out of the home until you have checked everything out and have determined that it is safe. Do not drink water from your tap after a hurricane. Use only your bottled water or boil water until you are informed that the water is safe. You will need to contact your insurance company immediately if your home is damaged.
Hurricanes are very frightening but because you have planned carefully you and your family will be just fine. |
