The decision to lay down vinyl floor tiles is a good step toward whatever remodeling project you¡¯re working on.  Vinyl is easy to clean, easy to lie down and fairly inexpensive.  But there are a lot of different patterns and picking the right one can be a hard task.  The following is a simple guide to achieving the design you want.

Vinyl flooring comes in two different types.  There are the actual tiles that you can lay down in squares and cut to fit around hard to reach areas.  The square tiles are pre glued and easy to cut.  Just remove the backing and secure to the clean bare plywood.  The other type of tile is actually called linoleum.  This is a rolled tile and can be infinitely more difficult to handle because it is rolled.  The linoleum requires you to use glue and while simple to cut is hard to fit into tight spaces.

Kitchens and bathrooms are good places to put the linoleum vinyl flooring.  As previously mentioned, it is harder to handle but you won¡¯t wave to worry about the tile picking up and leaving the wood exposed underneath.  This eliminates damage from the moisture and spilt water that are in these rooms.  Another place to put the linoleum is the laundry area because there is the potential for water spillage.  Any other room in your house that you are looking to decorate can be done with a vinyl tile.  However, you don¡¯t want to do your entire house because then you run the risk of it looking like a school or similar building.  In general, finished basements, entrance ways, hallways, or the home office are good places to lay down your square tiles.  

Many home improvement stores have tiles in singles and in boxes.  This means that you can purchase a single tile or purchase an entire box of tiles.  If you¡¯re debating about the pattern, style or design that you want, purchase your options in singles.  You can then take these single tiles home and spread them out.  They are also great for matching against the paint scheme that you have in mind.  Some home improvement stores will allow you to return the tiles you don¡¯t want so you¡¯re not really losing any money, check with the courtesy desk first.  For the linoleum vinyl tile, you¡¯re going to need to know exactly what you want.  There are a few stores that will cut off a sample or have samples available for the customer.  Check with the representative in that specific department.

The pattern that is displayed on your tile can set the entire tone for your home.  For example, several tiles available come with a faux marble finish.  This means that they look like marble tiles without the cost or the fear that one will get broken.  Marble tiles stuck together properly, with no gaps, can set an elegant tone for your home.  It looks fabulous in bathrooms, entrance ways and home offices.  Another popular pattern is a diamond pattern.  This pattern has a solid diamond in the center while the rest of the tile is crafted after that same color.  This is a good pattern to match kitchens, bathrooms and also looks great in an entrance way.  The last pattern to discuss is a floral pattern.  The recommendation on this pattern is exclusive for entrance ways and/or kitchens.  The pattern is elegant and simple and can be worked into any design scenario for your home.  You will want to keep an eye on the pattern on the tile itself for design as you may need to ¡°match¡± corners to achieve the proper look.  Again, depending on the design style that you are trying to achieve or the color of paint you are trying to match, keep in mind that vinyl floor is available as square tiles and rolled linoleum.  

Pick up a few samples at your home improvement store and get ready to set the tone in your home.  Keep in mind that adapting the colors, patterns and types of tile is crucial to the design flow.  Replacing vinyl tile or installing new vinyl where none existed before can be an easy task.
