If you have a vinyl tile floor anywhere in your house, it may not look as good as it did when you first had it installed. It might have a divot in it, or a hole, or maybe even a few of the tiles are burnt or melted. The nice thing about vinyl floor tiles is that their twelve inch square sections can be replaced whenever one is damaged, without replacing the entire floor. 

To start with, in repairing and replacing burnt and melted vinyl floor tiles, you will need to remove the damaged tiles. If the tiles are at any side of the room, you might need to remove the wall molding that is on one or two sides of them first. Use a hammer and a screwdriver to gently pry the wall molding off. Then, you can remove the tiles in one of two ways: either by heating the damaged tiles, or by using ice to cool them. If you choose to use a hair blow dryer or a heat gun to heat the tiles that you want to remove, you will need to make sure that you heat the entire surface of the tiles. The heat will help to soften the adhesive glue underneath the tiles, making it easier to remove them. Be careful not to heat any of the surrounding vinyl floor tiles, though, because you don't want them to come up too. Or, if you don't have a hair blow dryer or a heat gun, you may choose to lay bags of ice on the damaged vinyl floor tiles. The ice will make the floor tiles cold and brittle, and easier to remove. 

Note: Before you begin to actually remove the damaged vinyl floor tiles, be sure that you put safety goggles on to protect your eyes.                      

After you have either heated or cooled the tiles, use a putty knife to lift a corner up. Be careful when you are using a putty knife that you don't lift up or damage the surrounding floor tiles. If the tiles are heated, the entire twelve inch squares should come up cleanly in full pieces. If you cooled the tiles instead, the tile should now be brittle, and it will probably come up in small pieces. You will then have to work your way across the tiles to remove all of the pieces. 

After you have all the damaged vinyl floor tiles removed, you will need to use an adhesive remover and a putty knife to remove leftover adhesive from the sub-floor. Then, check the sub-floor to make sure that it doesn't have gouges or divots in it. If it does, you will need to patch them with quality wood filler. Allow the wood filler to dry thoroughly, and then sand the patched areas so they are smooth and flat. 

The next step is to vacuum the area thoroughly to remove the dust and debris from the sanded wood filler. Then - do not remove the protective paper from the back of the new vinyl floor tiles yet - just lay the tile squares down in place on the sub-floor. Make sure the tiles fit properly, and that the tiles are in their proper order so that they match the pattern on the rest of the floor. 

Finally, remove the paper backing on the tiles and press them into place on the sub-floor. You can use a rolling pin to help press them down permanently. Roll the pin across the replaced tiles several times to make sure the adhesive sticks them in place.                         

Replace any wall molding that you removed, and your project is finished.
