Nobody likes a dirty, cluttered garage, especially when you park your car there and have to walk around litter or equipment. Here are a few tips to help you organize your garage and make it useful for storing things you will need to use from time to time.
First, go through the entire garage and find things that are broken or items you will never use, like leftover pink wall paint. You will be surprised by all of the junk that is put there just to get it out of the house. Clear away these things to open up usable space.
Next, get rid of bugs and mice. Use an old broom to sweep away anthills and insect eggs. Wear a dust mask and open the garage door for good ventilation while you clean the interior. Put down mice pellets in a covered area where pets and children can¡¯t get to them, but where the mice can.
If your garage floor is not sealed, when you sweep it the concrete will make dust. But if it is sealed, then you can sweep it, use a dust mop on it, or even wet mop it. Use a shop vacuum on the walls, beams, or shelves and tables to remove dust. Then take a wet rag to wipe up spills or stains. If your garage has a drainage hole, you might want to use a garden hose to wash down the walls. Don¡¯t get anything that is electric wet, like light plug outlets or the garage door motor.
A new coat of paint always makes the garage look cleaner and protects it from rust. If it is made from wood, fresh paint will keep the wood from rotting. Putting in shelves or cupboards can really help organize your tools and allow you to store things that you don¡¯t want the children to get into, like gas cans, paint, or oil for your car and mower.
If your garage holds yard equipment like a riding mower, a wheelbarrow, and maybe a small tractor, you might want to buy a tool shed for the backyard. Buy some hooks and hangers so you can organize your garden tools. After you hang them up, take a black marker and trace around the tools so you will know where to return them.
If you have any boxes sitting in the garage, label the outside with a list of anything in them. Then seal the box good and tight. Also label anything you put inside a cupboard and post a list on the inside door. Label all of your toolboxes and label all cans so you don¡¯t put gas in a water or oilcan. Lock up valuable tools and equipment in case you forget to close the garage door.
After organizing the garage and labeling everything so you can find and return tools and other items to their prearranged places, you will have more area for working on your car, bathing the dog, or completing a wood-building project. Most of all, you will enjoy the pleasure of a job well done and the satisfaction that a clean, well-organized work area brings. |
