Chests have been used throughout the years for many different functions.  They can be made of various materials including cedar.  Some are quite beautiful, especially those that are handcrafted.  They come in handy for extra seating, but they are also great for eliminating clutter.  

-If you have a square or rectangular kitchen table, remove two chairs from one side and add a chest.  You can purchase or create a nice cushion to make it into a comfortable seat, and it will add a great deal storage for items such as large pots and pans or bowls. A chest would also make a good place to store your best dishes so they don¡¯t take up valuable cabinet space, or to store small appliances such as a slow cooker or a blender, so you can free up counter space.  It can also be used as a space to stash plastic storage containers and lids, or the roasting pan and platter that you only use during the holidays.  Of course, a chest can be used for extra pantry space as well, and you can stock it full of canned goods.  

-In the dining room, you can add a chest in place of chairs or up against a wall, and use it as storage for your good silver and serving pieces.  A chest would also make a terrific place to tuck away tablecloths, linen napkins, and centerpieces.  

-Add a chest to your living room as a coffee table or an extra seating element.  You can store extra pillows, blankets, and sleeping bags inside.  It can also be used to store magazines, books, board games and puzzles, or to keep CD¡¯s and videos out of sight.  

-Chests come in handy in bedrooms as well.  They create more space for storing extra bedding, seasonal clothing, heavy jackets and sweaters that take up too much closet space, or shoes, handbags, and small pieces of luggage.  In children¡¯s rooms, chests make excellent toy storage, or a place to put away snowsuits, boots, and other seasonal gear.

-In the den or study, a chest can be used to store paperwork and books as well as office supplies.  It also makes a great space for organizing fabric, knitting supplies, craft items, or holiday decorations and gift-wrap.  

-A chest can be used in a bathroom as a place to keep towels and washcloths, or to store appliances like hair dryers, curling irons, and bathroom scales.   

-In an entry way a chest can be introduced as a place to sit and remove shoes.  The shoes can then be stored inside along with backpacks, umbrellas, and sports gear.  

-Chests can be used near windows to create a mock window seat.  This idea would be especially nice in a nursery.  Covering the chest with a cushion and fluffy pillows would make it a cozy place to sit, as well as a nice place to hide extra diapers and a diaper bag, or items that are set aside until the baby grows into them.  This can be the perfect spot for storing large items such as a baby carrier or a stroller (folded into the compact position of course). 

-An idea that might seem unusual is adding a chest to the laundry room.  The top can be used as a folding table, and laundry products, an iron, and a sewing kit can be stored inside.  This would also make another great space for putting away seasonal clothing, extra linens, or hand-me-downs that children have not quite grown into yet.    

-In a bonus room or family room, two or three chests can be lined up end to end against one wall to create banquette seating and supply a tremendous amount of extra storage.  Kids often congregate in the family room, dragging games, toys, and other gear along with them.  You might want to assign each child his or her own chest.  This way, each one can be responsible for putting away their belongings, and the family room will be stay neater.  

Chests can be used in any room of the home and the possibilities for what can be stored inside them are endless.
