If there¡¯s one thing that can be found in practically every home it is salt.  Salt seems to permeate our entire existence from our bodies to our environments.  We wouldn¡¯t be able to stay alive without the proper amount of salt in our bodies.  There are so many things that salt can be used for that it just might be the most useful substance there is.

Salt can be a lifesaver in the kitchen and not just for seasoning food.  If you have a fresh fish that needs to have its scales removed soak the fish in salt water beforehand and the scales will come off faster.  Can¡¯t remember how old those eggs in the refrigerator are? Just take a glass of salt water and drop the egg inside.  An old egg will float to the top of the glass and a good one will head towards the bottom.  If you are making Jello and want it to set quickly you can add a bit of salt to it.  If you are baking and something bubbles over into the oven a covering of salt on the mess will stop it from burning and make cleanup a breeze.

Salt is a wonderful substance for cleaning around the home.  A solution of lemon juice and salt will clean the delicate keys of your piano.  A paste of vinegar, salt, and flour will make a great polish for pewter, copper, brass, and aluminum.  If you get a wine stain pour salt on it immediately and it will come out in the wash.  To remove mildew stains mix a bit of lemon juice and salt together and rub it in.  Fresh ink stains can be removed from carpeting by sprinkling on a pile of salt and letting it soak up the ink.  Scaly build-up can be easily removed from your iron by carefully rubbing salt on with a slightly wet cloth while the iron is hot.  If you¡¯ve ever tried to clean up a broken egg from the floor you know how frustrating it can be.  Just pour salt on the egg and leave it for about fifteen minutes and it will clean up easily.  If you have stains from tea or coffee in your mugs you can clean them off by rubbing salt on them.

Some rather annoying problems can easily be solved with just a bit of salt.  To prevent frost from forming on windows in your home or car try washing them with very salty water.  Do you remember the episode of The Brady Bunch where Bobby tried to wash his own clothes?  If you put too much soap in the washing machine you can make the suds dissipate by sprinkling on a bit of salt.  Instead of using expensive and dangerous weed killers on your sidewalk you can sprinkle salt in between the cracks to prevent grass and weeds from growing.  Salt can also kill the poison ivy in your yard.  Mix salt with a bit of water and dish detergent and put it into a spray bottle.  Spray the poison ivy and the salty soap will cling to the leaves and kill the plant.  Salt will soothe a bee sting and makes a great gargle for a sore throat.  A half a cup of salt added to your laundry will stop colors from fading and help remove stains.

Salt is extremely inexpensive so keep one or two extra containers on hand at all times.
