Finding your necklace in a knot when you are dressed and ready to leave can be frustrating. What do you do?

First, try not to panic, because the most important tool needed to untangle a necklace is patience! You may be able to untangle it gently with your fingers, but this will only happen if you first take a deep breath, sit down near a good light, and take it step-by-step. If you do what comes naturally, which is to growl loudly and tug at the necklace, you will likely tangle it worse and possibly break it.

If working the knot with your fingers does not work, then set the necklace down on a hard surface and spread it out so that you can see the heart of the knot. Find a pin, and use that to pick, poke and pry into the knot. Go slowly, and probe the center of the knot, trying to slowly loosen it. Once it begins to open, you should be able to see better how to work the strands to straighten it. Use the pin, rather than your fingers, to gradually draw out the strands as the knot releases them.

Usually you will end up needing to push some of the strands back into the knot in order to ¡°undo¡± it. In other words, it may look worse before it gets better, but don¡¯t worry if it gets chaotic. Untangling a necklace successfully can be one of those Zen type experiences, where you meditate on the thing you are doing and ¡°go into¡± it.  Seriously, if you can remain calm and ¡°become one¡± with the necklace, you will be more successful in following intuitive clues that can help you get unstuck. 

If the tangle is so tight that even the pin cannot budge the strands, try using a drop or so of baby oil right on the knot of a chain necklace. If your necklace is made of cording or hemp, you can try sticking your pin into a candle to wax it, and then reinsert it into the strands. Again, it is crucial that you continue working with patience. Remember to keep breathing and chant a helpful verse, such as ¡°I¡¯m really having fun, I¡¯m really having fun.¡±

As a last resort with a chain necklace, you can choose to break it skillfully. Use a pair of jewelry pliers or eyebrow tweezers and gently open one of the links on either side of the knot. Remove the knot, and then rejoin the links. This technique will not work with a hemp or cord necklace, however.

Finally, prevention is the best policy to avoid tangling jewelry in the future. Learn to store your necklaces neatly. One way to do this is to hang each necklace on a separate peg, or coil them into tidy circles in separated compartments of a jewelry box. You can also try a trick used for travel, which is to thread your necklace through a straw before you put it in the drawer.
