Tropical plants can thrive indoors as houseplants.  These plants will thrive in humid climates.  There are many varieties of tropical plants to choose from for your home.

Anthuriums are a colorful indoor tropical plant with velvet palmate-shaped leaves. The flowers are long lasting. Flaming Anthurium has long, narrow nodding spikes with all the true yellow flowers set off by a huge, waxy heart-shaped scarlet bract that turns green when it matures. Crystal Anthurium has a large cordate with leaves l4 inches long and l0 inches wide, heart shaped and very beautiful. The green leaves have white veins and the underneath is pale rose. These plants are excellent for hanging baskets. Lady Palm (Raphis) is a fan palm with thick sturdy leaves. There are varieties of Lady Palm that are green, variegated, and of dwarf types.  Some varieties are used as classic ornamental palms.  R. homilies have leaves with 10-20 segments, and reach a height to 18 feet.  R. excelsa a smaller variety has leaves bearing five to 8 broad leaflets, similar to bamboo.  These plants are very popular as indoor tropical plants.  

Dragon Tree (dracaena) is an evergreen, tropical, foliage plant. The size has to be contained when grown indoors. Leaves are narrow, sword like with an excellent foliage display.  Flowers are greenish, yellowish or red in color. Deremensis has leaves ?-2 ft long and 2 in wide. The leaves are narrow at both ends with a long sharp point at the end away from the stem. The flowers grow in large panicles, having white insides and dark red outside.  Draco has crowded leaves to two feet long and one inch wide. The flowers are greenish with orange berries. Ficus, a tropical evergreen is very popular as an indoor tropical houseplant. Benjamin has spreading to drooping branches, and oval leathery leaves to four inches long. Ficus elastica (Indian Rubber) is a leathery, evergreen with leaves four to 12 inches long. The fruit is yellowish, one half inch long. The parallel veins on the leaves at right angles to the midrib. Peace Lilly is widely cultivated as an indoor species. The leaves are thick and sturdy. The plants varieties are in variegated and green forms. There are some dwarf varieties. This can be used as a classic ornamental palm.

Bromeliads are very popular plants. Plumeria has oblong, alternate, leathery leaves to 10 inches long and up to three inches wide. The leaves have rolled margins that are white and hairy underneath.  The white fragrant flowers have a yellow eye and are an inch and more wide. Mexican Frangipani has fragrant flowers borne in terminal flat clusters, colored a clear yellow with creamy-white edges of the petals. The species, P. rubra, has deep red flowers; there are numerous hybrids with flowers of different colors.

Bananas have varieties varying from five to 30 feet. Smaller varieties of the banana plant will grow to 10 feet.  The main stem is the under ground rhizome. The trunk is a pseudo-stem made up of overlapping leaf-stalk bases. The blades are thin, and innately veined.  

Heliconias are remarkable tropical plants of princely dimension. These tropical plants have huge stems and leaves and beautiful ornamental flowers. Heliconias are easily grown and produce a brilliant and exotic showing.  They are a perennial herb with long-stalked smooth green leaves three ft long and a foot wide. The leaves have raised lateral veins, and greenish-yellow flowers in erect clusters. The flowers are enclosed in bright reddish bracts 6 in long. This plant is grown for its foliage effects.

Ginger plants have wonderful fragrances, delicate foliage and beautiful flowers and can be excellent indoor tropical houseplants. Some of the plants have ornate foliage and the flowers are in a varied array of beautiful colors. Alpinia zerumbet is a beautiful solid green foliage plant with large pendant inflorescence white and pink flowers with red and yellow throats.  Costus pictus is a tall species with red spotted stems. The stems are thin and leaves are narrow. This plant produces a spiraling effect when grown.
