If you're plagued with termites each year, chances are you have the exterminator's number handy. However, if you haven't experienced this problem before, you may be wondering if you can get rid of the termites yourself, or when the right time is to call the professionals.
There are a few home remedies you could try to rid your home of termites, and there are even naturopathic exterminators that will get rid of the termites naturally without causing too much damage to the termites or your home. You can find chemicals for treating termites yourself at garden and home repair stores, but you have to make sure that you're treating all areas of the home where termites could do damage; this includes the plumbing entries, the foundation of the home, and all entry points of the home. This does not include just doors-termites could enter through wooden floor boards in the floors or close to windows. However, it may take several treatments for natural or chemical remedies to work, which could get rather expensive. When you have termites, it's not a good idea to undergo a lengthy extermination process; more damage could be done to your home this way. If you procrastinate when it comes to getting rid of termites, you could end up paying hundreds, even thousands of dollars later to repair the damage--termites are very persistent and work constantly to increase the colonies they build under your home, so the sooner you call the exterminator, the better.
So, shopping around for exterminators in your area is probably the best way to go. You should check your local yellow pages for exterminators relatively close to your home, and call to ask for rates and treatment features. You may even want to ask for contact information for some of the customers each company services, so that you can find out how well the company works from a consumer's point of view. You can try trusted pest control companies, like Orkin, who treat both residential and business locations, and you can be pretty sure that the job will get done in a resonable amount of time and the return of termites will significantly decrease. However, larger pest extermination businesses will charge more for their services; smaller pest control businesses will be more personable and able to work around your schedule; you'll also find cheaper rates withe these businesses, since they are competing with one another and need the business.
If you need more tips on termite elimination, or if the companies you've contacted in your area don't have exactly what you need, you may want to try to do a little research online to find other ways to keep termites from invading your home. And, if you're looking to move into another home soon, make sure that the home is treated for termites at least a month before you move in, so that you can see how effective the treatment has been and decide if more action should be taken. And, if you currently have termites in your home, treating them as quickly as possible could also lessen the risk of your neighbors getting a little visit from these destructive insects.
