So your spouse got transferred, or your job was downsized, or you inherited your aunt¡¯s house, and you are moving to Wyoming. It could be worse. Wyoming has a lot good points, and few things that are good to know. There are other things that I will let you find out on your own. Believe me, redneck neighbors can be downright friendly and hot cocoa never tasted so wonderful. I¡¯m kidding! (Kind of). Moving to Wyoming is pretty much like moving to anywhere else. Once you get accustomed to the new place, it isn¡¯t too bad.
Just for your information, the state bird of Wyoming is the meadowlark (so don¡¯t shoot it), the state flower is the Indian Paintbrush (gorgeously red and abundant, but don¡¯t pick it), it is known as the Equality State because Wyoming was the first state to give women the right to vote, and the capitol is Cheyenne (named after a Native American tribe, which is a popular practice here). The population is just over 500,000 people, which isn¡¯t many for such a large state. The top two job categories are industry and agriculture. Pollution is almost nonexistent here, and unemployment and the cost of living are lower than the national average.
Probably the most important thing to know about moving to Wyoming is that the weather can be very extreme. Winter blizzards can come up very quickly. Most cities and towns in Wyoming are isolated from one another, and it is not uncommon for major highways and roads to be closed due to bad weather. It is a standing joke that in Wyoming we have two seasons, winter and the fourth of July. And it you don¡¯t like the current weather, wait five minutes, because it will change. The weather can actually be very beautiful, but if you are planning to move to Wyoming during the winter, plan extra days for the move in case of bad weather. It may take you and/or your moving van extra time to get to your new home. When traveling in Wyoming, it is suggested that you carry extra supplies such as food, clothing, water, cell phone, blankets, flashlight, flares, etc. Being prepared is always a good idea, whether in winter or summer. Summer weather is usually very nice, with hot days and cool nights.
The air in Wyoming is very dry. So if you are used to humidity, be ready for a change and pack lotion. The altitude is also higher than many other states, and you might discover that you are out of breath after any exertions and feel occasional light-headedness. (No, you¡¯re not having a panic attack!) Take it slowly if you feel these symptoms, and know that you will get used to it after a very short time.
When moving to any new area, it is smart to set up your utilities and other services to be turned on a day before you get there. If you call the Chamber of Commerce for the city you are moving to, they will happily provide you with the numbers to call and other area information. Remember to get copies of school and medical records before you leave, and take important documents with you in your vehicle and not packed away in the moving van. If possible, you should set up a new checking account before you arrive so that you have local access to money that you might need for any unforeseen moving charges or other unexpected events.
You will have to get a new driver¡¯s license at some point, and not all towns in Wyoming have a Department of Transportation. They are done by county, and you may have to travel to another town in your county to get a new driver¡¯s license. You will need the usual documentation and there will be a vision screening unless you had a recent visit with your eye doctor and have the official report from him/her.
Wyoming is actually a nice place to live. People in Wyoming are generally very friendly and helpful. Most places still have small town values and attitudes, and people can be counted on to provide you with assistance, should you need it. If you enjoy the outdoors, you will be in seventh heaven living here. Wyoming residents love to participate in a variety of outdoor activities. Hunting, boating, rock climbing, camping, archery, golf, skiing-you name it, you can find a place to do it in Wyoming and people to do it with. So enjoy moving to Big, Wonderful Wyoming, and we welcome you!
