A home that has old, leaky windows can waste a lot of heating and cooling energy. And that's money you could be putting in the bank, instead of letting it escape outside. While installing new, thermal windows is the ideal home improvement solution, they are costly to purchase. So, the next best alternative is to seal up the existing windows in your house.
To do this, you'll need to first inspect all of the windows in your home, from the basement, clear up to the attic. Look for cracked and broken glass panes that need replaced. Also, look for missing caulking around the panes. Make a mental list of the windows that need repaired. Before you can completely seal them up from the winter cold or the summer heat, you'll need to take care of the repairs first.
The next step is to replace any broken window glass you have found. Then, purchase a good quality weather resistant caulking. Use the caulking to seal up any gaps around the window panes where the original caulking is cracked or is missing. Follow the manufacturer's instructions in order to use the product correctly.
In your basement, if there are cracks and gaps around where the window frame meets the cement wall, you can purchase and use a special type of masonry caulking to fill in these energy wasting spaces.
After you have repaired every window in your home, then it's time to finish sealing them. You can seal them by purchasing and using storm windows. The advantage of these sealers is that you can use them over and over again. Winter, summer, spring, or fall, storm windows will keep the cold air out during the frigid months, and the summer heat out during the feverish months of the year.
The biggest disadvantage to using storm windows is their cost. They can be almost as costly as purchasing brand new windows. You can't buy storm windows off a store shelf. They need to be measured and custom built to fit the windows in your home.
The less costly alternative to purchasing storm windows is to purchase some manufactured window sealing kits. These kits come with clear sheets of plastic, strips of cardboard and brad nails, or, they come with double sided tape. You can also buy rolls of clear, four or five mill thick clear plastic and use that to seal your windows. The rolls of plastic are usually thicker and more energy efficient than the plastic that comes in the sealing kits.
Using a window sealing kit is a very easy task that anyone can do. You should follow the manufacturer's instructions for the best results. Basically, though, you cut the included plastic sheets to fit over each one of your windows. You'll need to allow a few inches of extra plastic on each side of the window frame. If the kit has cardboard strips and brad nails, you'll first stretch each piece of plastic over the window. Then, you'll place the cardboard over the edges and nail it into place with the brads.
If you purchase a kit that has double sided tape instead, then you'll need to measure, cut, and apply the tape to the window frame. The next step is to measure and cut the plastic, then stretch it and press it into place onto the tape. This type of window sealing kit doesn't damage the frames of the windows in any way. On the other hand, the kit that has brad nails in it leaves small holes in the wood when the plastic is removed.
Once the windows in your house are repaired and are sealed, you'll notice a difference in the indoor temperature right away. The sheets of plastic will efficiently help to reduce the amount of air that gets in, and the air that gets outside.
