After many times of washing and waxing a tile floor over and over again, the wax can build up and cause a flaky, yellow - looking residue all over your tile floor. The only way to get rid of this build up is to strip all of the wax from the floor.
There is one basic way that you can strip the old wax from your tile floor, but you can choose from a variety of wax strippers. You can choose the stripper that works the best for you on your tile floor. Remember to wear protective eye wear to prevent against splatters, and a good pair of rubber gloves to protect your hands with.
The first step in stripping a tile floor is to sweep the entire the floor with a broom or dust mop.
You will want to strip the wax off of the wall boards (if applicable) and the corners of the floor first. Use a scrubber pad and a good commercial wax stripper, or use a solution of isopropyl alcohol and water; one part alcohol to three parts cool tap water. Or, you can use a solution of household ammonia, vinegar, and cool tap water, and scrub up the wax with a brush. Use one cup of ammonia and one cup of vinegar to a gallon of cool tap water.
The easiest wax stripper to use is a good commercial type. You will need to follow the manufacturer's instructions in order to achieve the maximum results, but here are the basic instructions:
The second step is to either apply the wax stripper directly onto the tile floor or dilute it in cool tap water, according to the instructions. Work on just one small area at a time. Spread the stripper around evenly by using a clean, lint free mop. Let the wax stripper sit on the tile floor for the specified period of time. Be careful that you do not let it dry on the floor, or you will have to put it on again. If necessary, you can use a scrubber pad to loosen up the yellow wax build up.
The third step in stripping a tile floor is, when the required time has elapsed, the solution on the tile floor should now be a milky - white color. This is caused by the stripped wax coming up off of the floor and mixing into the solution. Use a bucket full of clean, cool tap water and another clean, lint - free mop. Do not use the same mop that you used to strip the floor with to clean up the used solution. Then, move onto the next area of the tile floor and repeat the stripping procedure.
After the last area that was stripped dries, if it is milky or dull - looking, there is probably still another coat of wax on the tile floor. If so, you will have to reapply the floor stripper at least one more time in order to remove the leftover wax.
Finally, when you have stripped the wax from the entire floor, thoroughly rinse out the mop that you used to clean up the wax with. Get a clean bucket of cool tap water and mop the entire floor one more time to make sure you have removed all of the wax and solution residue. Let the floor dry and apply your first coat of new floor wax.
