Stone floors have become a popular home decorating choice. Many people choose to install their stone floor by themselves. If you have installed your own, it is very important to seal the floor. This can also be done by yourself; however, there are some things to know before you decide to seal your floor yourself. If you mess it up, it can be very costly to fix it. So following instructions and doing a little research beforehand is a good idea.
Floor sealers have many purposes. A sealer will enhance the color and appearance of the stone. It also helps to stabilize softer floor materials and any surrounding grout. A sealer will provide stain resistance and make the floor easier to maintain in the future. Last, but not least, a good sealing will protect it and lengthen the life of your floor.
There are many different types and brands of floor sealer on the market. A good sealer is intended to penetrate the floor, so it is very important that you pick the sealer that is appropriate for your floor. There are two kinds of stone floors, natural and man-made. Each requires a specific type of sealer. The place where you purchased your floor materials should be able to tell you what kind of sealer you will need and recommend a brand. As with most things, you get what you pay for, so don¡¯t buy the cheapest brand you can find. You floor is a long-term investment and you should treat it accordingly.
Once you have purchased the right sealer, the next step is to clean your floor. If there are any stains, use a professional stain remover that comes in powder form and is mixed with water to form a paste. Apply the paste to the stain, cover with plastic wrap and allow to set for 24-48 hours, depending on the severity of the stain. Once any stains have been removed use a good neutral cleaner that is designed for stone floors to clean the floor thoroughly. The floor must then bi rinsed and allowed to dry.
Now it is time to apply the sealer. It is a good idea to test it first in an inconspicuous area to see how it will appear after it has been sealed. Allow the test area to cure for the recommended amount of time before moving on to the rest of the floor. The biggest mistake with applying sealer is that most people don¡¯t apply enough. Pour a puddle of sealer onto the floor and allow it to soak for ten minutes. If it soaks in too quickly, pour more sealer on the area. After ten minutes, use a soft brush to move the excess sealer to the next area of the floor. Work is small sections and follow the same steps. When the entire floor has been completed, allow the floor to cure for the amount of time recommended on the instructions.
The best way to check if the sealer has been applied correctly and in sufficient amounts is to test it with some water. Pour a small amount of water on the floor, if it beads up, the sealer is most likely done well. If the water soaks into the stone and creates a dark area, not enough sealer has been applied. Some sealers last for up to ten years, others for less. Read the instructions so that you will know when your floor will need another application.
As with all home improvement projects, it is important to read all instructions and find out the correct products and tools needed. Use common sense, and remember to ventilate the area while applying sealer, and keep it away from pets, plants and children.
