Shower doors come in a variety of sizes and styles, so you have many options to find the perfect shower door for you bathroom.  When you decided to install or replace a shower door, you will need to consider the space limitations of your bathroom, as well as, the decorative look you would like.  The following will guide you through the different styles and options commonly available.

Sliding Shower Doors

Sliding shower doors are the most common shower door, and it takes up little space. With two or more sliding panels, sliding shower doors glide along an upper and lower track.  These shower doors can be installed in a full-sized shower door opening or on top of a bathtub¡¯s edge.  Something to consider is that the rollers on these doors will wear out and need to be replaced occasionally.  They also can be difficult to clean. 

Swinging Shower Doors

Swinging shower doors are an option for larger bathrooms.  With doors as wide as 48 inches, swinging shower doors are used with fixed panels to cover a larger space.  These doors are secured with a magnetic latch and may swing in one or both directions, depending on the style.  The path of the opening door should be considered before installation, so it will not hit sinks, toilets or towel racks.

Curved Doors

Curved doors offer a more spacious feeling for corner showers.  With a 90 degree arc, the door can add a couple of inches to the shower unlike a swinging door.  It mounts like a swinging shower door, but should only be used if you have a curved shower floor.

Bi-Fold Doors

Bi-fold doors fold inward like an accordion, which is great for small spaces.  Also, by opening inward, water drips into the shower rather than onto the bathroom floor.  One of the disadvantages of this style is that the doors over time can sometimes bind along the track.

Frame and Frameless Styles

Shower doors sometimes come in either a frame or frameless style.  Framed doors are usually made of aluminum, but can be coated with different finishes so many colors are available.  Frames are treated to resist corrosion, but they can still fade with the sun and stain from mineral deposits.

Frameless shower doors are becoming a more popular choice as people are deciding they want to show off their tile or marble rather than the shower door.  Frameless doors are mounted with hinges that attach to the glass, and they are easier to clean.

Glass Options

Glass in a shower door is either clear or opaque.  Clear glass offers a better view of tile or marble in a shower, but it also shows streaks and spots.  Opaque glass comes in a variety of styles and is the more popular choice.  This glass is more forgiving when it comes to cleaning.  Manufactures also offer several decorative glass etching and stain glass designs.
