Eight out of nine times, a burglar breaks in a house through a door. A burglar can break through the glass on a glass door or pry the door to make it slide open. He also can lift the door out of its track to get it open. So if you want your house to be safe, you will need to outwit a burglar to keep him from getting into your home through the glass door. So the first thing you can do is make a Charlie bar.
A Charlie bar is a removable drop bar. It is more of a visual than a physical deterrent. The burglar can pop the bar open, but most of the time he or she will go to another house that does not have one. Make sure you don¡¯t use any piece of wood that might break under pressure, such as a broomstick. When preparing the door, you will need to measure halfway up the door and mark it with a pencil. Place the rotating bracket in the door jam of the stationary door. Then put the locking saddle on the inside edge of the sliding door, and note where the screws will be inserted. Using a level, make sure the bar is straight. To drill the holes, take an awl and a hammer. Make an indentation on the pencil marks. This will make it easier to start the drill bit. Measure and then mark your drill bit with a piece of masking tape so you don¡¯t drill too deeply. Put on your safety glasses and drill your holes. Line everything up so the holes match. Then use a Phillips screwdriver to insert the screws and tighten.
Next, install track screws so no one will be able to lift the door off the track. Remember not to insert these screws flush with the upper inside track. The screws have to protrude from the track. Completely open the sliding door. Now measure the length of the upper inside door. Divide the length into thirds and mark the location of the three screws with a pencil. Put the drill bit in just deep enough so the chuck will hold it. You need a one- eighth drill bit. Drill all three holes completely through the track. Now tighten down the screws far enough that they clear the door travel. Slide the door to make sure that there is no resistance. If there is, tighten the screws a little deeper into the track.
When you buy a foot lock, you should read the instructions because some are different than others. Close the door and lock it. Take the foot lock in one hand, and place it flush with the front edge of the base of the sliding door. Take the locking rod in the extended position just high enough from the bottom so the rod won¡¯t get in the way of the sliding door. With someone else holding the lock in position, place the awl into the lock¡¯s hole, and make an indentation. Put the drill bit in. Put on your safety glasses, and drill a one- fourth inch deep hole. Secure the screws, and take a hammer to the top of the lock rod to make an indentation in the front lower track. Then mark the indentation with a pencil. Remove the lock, and take a drill bit to drill into the lower track you have just marked. Keep changing your drill bit until the hole is big enough for the lock rod. You will have to slowly increase the bit size to make the hole big enough. Now insert the screws and tighten them.
Securing your glass door will make everyone in the family feel safer. If you don¡¯t feel comfortable attempting this job yourself, pay a friend or a professional to do it for you. |
