Many manufacturers offer rebates on some of their products that will enable you to get back a portion or all of the money you paid for an item. Certain retailers combine the manufacturers¡¯ rebates into a single booklet; you can send in one submission for several different rebates. This is an easy process if you follow these tips.
1. If you¡¯ve never sent in rebates before, you might wonder where they can be found. There are a variety of places where you can find rebates: retail stores, wireless phone companies, office supply chains, drugstore chains, electronics chains, and even car manufacturers offer rebates frequently, and you can also find rebates printed directly on the labels of some products, such as toiletries and food products. There are websites that list the details of all the rebates that are found in each state for each month; you can also pick up rebate booklets at stores that offer them each month. As you shop for groceries or other goods, look for products with rebates; usually there will be something on the front of the box or label to get your attention. Check newspaper inserts in Sunday papers for details of store rebates, and there are often rebate forms in the coupon inserts also.
2. All rebates have expiration dates, and you need to be aware of the beginning and ending dates of each rebate. Stores that have the single booklet for the rebates will usually make the booklet available only during the valid dates, and there is a date by which you must have your rebate form postmarked. For instance, a nationwide drugstore chain offers rebates each month in a booklet that is located on a rack inside each store¡¯s front entrance. The purchasing period for the rebates is for one month, and the deadline for the submission is about a week after the end of the rebate period; you must have your submission postmarked by that date, or it will be invalid and you won¡¯t receive a refund. If you want to purchase a product with a rebate form on its label, make sure the rebate is still open; many times products remain on the shelves much longer than the rebate period. Check newspaper ads and the rebate form to make sure you are buying the product within the correct period; some rebates are only good for a few days, especially those that make the product free.
3. Most rebates require you to send in a receipt, so keep the receipt when you are buying a product with a rebate. Some stores offer special ¡°rebate receipts¡± that enable you to keep the original receipt; some rebates allow copies of the receipt to be submitted, but others require an original receipt, so make sure you check the instructions. Some submissions also require a UPC code, proof of purchase seal, or other information from the packaging. If you are buying an electronic product, make sure it works before cutting off a UPC code, since you will not be able to make a return without it. Make sure you read the instructions as to what you are required to send in for the rebate; there is usually a phone number on the rebate form you can call for questions.
4. When purchasing rebate items, make sure you¡¯re buying exactly the right things. Often products come in different sizes, scents, strengths, etc., and the same brand name may be on many different types of products. If the rebate form requires you to buy a 12 oz. bottle of cough syrup, and you purchase a 6 oz. bottle, you will not receive the rebate. If you¡¯re using a product with a rebate form on the label, you can usually safely assume that you¡¯re buying the correct product; if you¡¯re using a rebate booklet, check the pictures of the rebate items and read the product descriptions carefully to ensure you are choosing the right item.
5. If you find several products with rebate forms on the labels and purchase them all at the same store, you may need to have separate receipts for each product. Most rebate submissions require original receipts, so separate the rebate products from the rest of your items and pay for each one separately. If you¡¯re at a store that has all-in-one rebate booklets, this allows you to use one receipt for all of the items.
6. Before purchasing items that have rebates, check to see if you can find coupons that will allow additional savings. Stores that have rebate booklets each month usually put some of the items on sale during certain weeks, making them ¡°freebates¡± only during a particular week. You will often find corresponding coupons in the Sunday newpapers for those items; for example, if you use a coupon for $2.00 off on shampoo, and then receive a rebate for its entire sales price, you will get back $2.00 more than you paid for the shampoo.
7. Look for double rebates on products. Sometimes you can receive more than one rebate from different sources; I recently bought a digital camera memory card from an online retailer, and received a rebate for half of its price from the manufacturer, and another rebate for more than the other half from an entertainment club I joined for a trial offer. When I called to cancel the trial period, the free offer was extended for another few months, so I ordered another card with a manufacturer¡¯s rebate from the same online retailer; I¡¯ll receive another rebate from the entertainment club, netting me two free memory cards for my camera. The additional rebate was featured on a link at checkout on the retailer¡¯s website, so check out added rebates when available; the rebate from the entertainment club was good on any product over a certain dollar amount bought from that particular retailer during a three-month period.
8. Some rebates require you to buy products that add up to a certain dollar amount, such as $20 or $40. If you buy several different products, make sure the amount you paid adds up to the dollar amount or above to ensure getting the rebate. Some rebates may come in the form of gift cards, movie tickets, coupons, or other incentives rather than money. One particular drugstore chain offers a gift card to their store as a rebate option; if you choose the card instead of a check, you receive an extra 10% on the refund. You can then use the gift card to purchase rebate items at that store for the next month. I sometimes save all the cards until Christmas; that chain sells gift cards to other retailers in their stores, and I can trade the rebate cards for those if I don¡¯t find what I need in the drugstore.
9. Make a copy of your rebate submission, including the form, receipts, and any proofs of purchase you had to enclose. Make sure you copy the phone number or website of the rebater in case you have any problems. I keep a list of rebates that I have submitted by dates, and include the name of the product, the amount I expect to receive, the address, etc. As the refunds come in, I mark them off the list. Occasionally you may have to call about a refund that doesn¡¯t arrive as promised, and the list and copies come in handy. If you have made a mistake on the submission, keeping a copy will allow you to see the problem; if the rebater has made the mistake, you will have proof of submission.
10. If you find a good rebate offer, tell your friends about it, and hopefully, they will return the favor. Recently, a friend who sent an email newsletter mentioned a rebate for test driving a car. I went to the car manufacturer¡¯s website and registered, and later received an email with a $25 rebate form for taking a test drive. I checked some other car and RV websites and found a $50 rebate form on one and a $25 gas card rebate form on another. I was looking for a new car anyway, and test driving three cars got me $100 in rebates and lots of information.
Rebating can save you lots of money if you are careful to purchase the right product at the right time and turn in the completed submission form on time. Many people buy products with rebates, but forget to fill out the forms before the deadline. Organization can help you to remember to get the forms mailed on time; use a notebook or folder to keep a list of your rebates and copies of forms, receipts and submissions. Rebating is easy and can be fun when your checks start rolling in; look around and you will be sure to find rebates for many products you buy all the time. |
