At first glance, a 50-dollar inkjet printer seems like a good deal. It's inexpensive, easy to hook up and install, and the print quality is pretty good for such a basic model.
That perspective changes when you suck the first black cartridge dry. The bill for the next one is fifteen to thirty dollars (or more) depending on the model of printer and where you shop for replacement cartridges.
On average, it costs something like 25 cents per printed page to use this "inexpensive" printer. You can save a little money by using recycled paper - or, better yet, plain old copy paper for drafts and other "unimportant" documents.
But that doesn't really reduce the cost much. The real savings come when you find better deals on replacement cartridges.
* If you're shopping for a printer, consider the cost of replacement cartridges before you buy a particular model. In some cases, paying a little more for a different printer will save money over the course of its life, because the cartridges are cheaper than the other model you considered buying.
* Printers that have separate cartridges for color and black inks are usually more cost-effective. Many computer users go through the black ink first: if you don't have to replace ALL the colors every time you drain one of them, you're getting more from the cartridges.
Those don't work if you've already purchased the printer. The following suggestions will help regardless of whether you've forked over the cash or not.
* Use draft-quality print options when possible. If your document is in the draft stage - or if it's just an "everyday" paper that doesn't have to look its best - you can probably get away with choosing the draft-quality output setting. This uses less ink without sacrificing too much in quality.
* Print in black-and-white when you can. Many graphics need to be printed in full color, but not always. If it's a draft, or if you're printing it out for an "everyday" purpose, you can probably go with black-and-white.
* Edit on-screen as much as possible. This is especially helpful for writers, copy editiors, students, and anybody else who works with text on a regular basis. You'll still need to print at least one draft before your final copy, but at least you won't have fifteen copies lying around, wasting ink and irritating you when you get the bill for the new cartridges.
* Keep your printer clean. Any piece of electronic equipment works more efficiently when it's kept in a clean, dust-free environment.
* Shop online. Web searches for "printer cartridges" will yield plenty of results. Many online businesses have set themselves up as recycled-cartridge dealers, which means that you'll get a better deal on your cartridges.
The advantages: you save money on cartridges without the hassle (and mess) of refilling them on your own.
The disadvantage: you must order a few days (or more) before your current cartridge is drained - or have a backup cartridge waiting and ready.
Before you go this route, be sure that your printer cartridges can be refilled. Some manfacturers have safeguarded the cartridges to prevent this.
* Buy a refill kit and do it yourself. This can be very messy the first few times, but if you take it to a place that can get messy (i.e. outside), you might find that it's worth the effort. This method can save quite a bit of money, and there's no waiting for the dealer to ship your new cartridges.
* Sell your empty cartridges back to the dealer. You may only get one dollar in store credit, but that's a buck you won't have to spend in the future. The ideal way to do this is to save the empties until you have half a dozen or more, which saves money on shipping charges. In some cases, the dealer will also give you a little more credit per cartridge for doing this.
Combining the above ideas will save a significant amount of money without adding to your workload or increasing your stress levels. |
